Vintage Cars, whos' got em?
 

Muscle cars are money pits, you kinda gotta know that going in. But the practicality aside, do any of you guys have project cars?

I've got a 67 Skylark GS. I've had her for almost 10 years now. 5 years ago I bought my house. Since owning my home, whenever I'm trying decide where to put my cash, house or car, home usually wins.

One good thing though is in the downtime I've taken my time searching out parts, and have about 2k in NOS and graveyard robbed parts waiting to go in, but now that I've got it I just never have time. There's always something else that needs to be done with business, around the house, etc.

It's not that I've lost the love, it's just that it's really taken a back seat. Kinda sad. :(

So what about you? Anyone here working on a car? What do you give up in your life to make it happen?

I have a 68 Camaro that I'm restoring right now. I just picked up the Currie rear end, Chris Alston front end and the 396 big block.

Its up at my parents house in PA since he has storage space for about 20 cars there. He takes it and the ones he owns out to the car shows and I don't have room to store it here right now. Might bring it down in the spring through. Between my dad and I we have 14 Studebakers. One of which won best of show 3 times at the national studebaker carshow. Mine has won a first and a second in the two shows it was in. I restored mine from the frame up everything is done as original. I did all the work on it other than I sent the engine out to be completely redone and machined. Well I did also send the interior out to be redone. I did all the body work as well, and all the paint work. Its in #1 condition and worth around 22 to maybe 27k. It stays in its nice climate controlled building nice and dry. It is a 55 Studebaker Speedster President.

Very nice. Right now in the buick I have a 350 from a monte carlo, but ready to swap it out with a 455 I pulled out of a 72 riviera gs. I picked up the boattail dirt cheap because it had some front end damage. I almost wanted to keep it, but after being wrecked it would have been way too much work. Beautiful glass though.

Getting that drivetrain out and engine on the stand was the last thing I've really done, and that was ages ago.

What are you doing for the body panels on the camero? Are they originals? Or are you picking up new ones after market from some where like year one?

Holy shit that is very impressive.

Keeping something that cherry I'm sure dry and climate controlled are key. I live in FL and it's not the worst climate since we don't get snow or salt the roads but the constant humidity plays it's games.

I did most of the bodywork and paint on 4 other Studebakers of my dads. Including the best of show winner. Not to toot ma own horn. :winkwink: I have cars in my blood. Worked on them since I was old enough to walk pretty much. lol

That is impressive. I would not trust myself to paint my own car, I'm not that skilled. I've done interior peices, but the body I'll leave to the professionals. I bet now is a really great time to shop around the body work.:2 cents:

define vintage ;) mine are from 1986 and 1993

My Baby 1970 Chevelle SS 454.
I have had it for 24 years now, bought it for 500 bucks back in the day.
As I used to be a mechanic I have always done all the work myself.
This is the latest restoration last year, as I had raced it as a pro gas car for years I decided to restore it to a street legal ground pounder.
Engine is now a bored and stroked 454 turned into a 528 CI
To many bells and whistles to list.
At the end of the day speed is just a question of money.....

Same here, I wouldn't call it vintage, but it 3 years I'll be able to register my 1988 300ZX Turbo as an antique =)

Going to be funny to have a turbo, t-tops, and digital climate control with antique plates =)

Mine is not a muscle car, but it still has a big heart and runs like a bat out of hell.

My 49' Ford. I chopped 4 inches out of the roof, shaved, decked, filled hood, etc. Hand fabbed new floors, rockers, patches. 289 SBF from a 67' Fastback. Need to narrow the 9" rear, plumb brakes, and scare some kids and old ladies.

While I'm not a big fan of high-rise intakes sticking out through the hood with massive air cleaners... that car is fucking sick. Other than putting a huge 7-8" hood on it there's really not much you can do though haha. Good stuff there.

Judging by the stock appearing rear wheel wells I'd say it's still on a small tire, 28x12.50x15 or so?

What does the car 60'? I love small tire cars :) I am in the process of researching how to make mine hook on a true street style drag radial and stock-style suspension. I'll probably go the easy way though and put a 275/50/15 M/T ET street on it though.

Car looks like a lot of fun, and I love Chevelles.

Any times with that combination in the car? From the car it looks to be certed to at least 9.50s if not faster but I don't see a chute mount unless it's lower ... can't tell from the pics

I have two sets of answers to this as I can't tell if you're talking about my car or his car.
Yes and no.

Yes because "technically speaking" a street tire is anything with a DOT number. Including anything from Kuhmo radials to Mickey Thompson ET Streets which have 3 little grooves in them to designate them as a "street approved tire."

No because do I think he's going to run 9s on a bias-ply hard compound radial? Nope. I very much doubt that. Not even if it's a steam roller style tire in the 33x18.50 range. There's just very little chance of that.



My car, on a "street tire" absolutely. I've seen plenty of small tire cars run great numbers (texas true 10.5 cars for example "TTT5"), there are a couple domestic cars that run in the 8s and 9s on a 17" drag radial/slick that is still legal to be driven on the street. I am basically planning to run a 335/40-45/17 (depending on what's available) on a widened rear wheel, and have the fronts narrowed to 4" with a suitable front runner. Am I saying that it's going to run 9s on a sumitomo or BFG radial?? Hell no. I doubt any amount of money or electronic gizmos could get it to hook on 600+ horsepower and hard tires.

But on a drag radial such as a MT ET Street, with the right suspension and the right amount of dialing in the nitrous system to leave soft and use a progressive nitrous controller to ramp up the HP so it's on the verge of breaking the tires loose, there's no reason the car can't run in the 9s on a "street tire." My car is about 25 dollars worth of parts (upgraded line from the solenoid to the nozzle and the right jets to spray 200) and a decent tune away from making over 600 to the wheels, which is plenty for a bottom 10 second / high 9 second pass.

I don't want to throw you for a loop and make your head explode, but I plan on doing all this on 91 octane too! :runs for cover:

Sweet! My First car was a 57 ford Fairlane with the same paint scheme you have here, but my interior was roll n tuck black leather. Had the 292 in it.. I have always wanted to find another and redo it the same way.

I have a set of 11 inch slicks for the track and a set of street M/T 60s for it as well.
Those are my street tires and rims for the highway.

I did go to a an adjustable four link set up in the rear but I refuse to narrow and tube the rear end as it kills the value.

And Et wise you are pretty close in its lightened days it ran 9:70 137mph on slicks with Nitrouse and a 4:88 rear end.
These days I have dropped it to a 3:88 so I can hit the highway, removed the NOS and added a lot of weight back (stereao etc )

I have put it on the dyno at the local college as I do speak there to the students once in a while and therfore the teachers let me play in the shop a bit.
We had it over 860 hp when we shut it down over concerns for the machine and ourselves.

The OLD version of this car lightened up Lexan windows and no interior to speak of could push a 9:70 in the pro gas class at the local track.

This version I am going to take back up for the Door slammer class next year I suspect it will now run somewhere in between 10:50 and 11:50 on my M/T slicks
Dont forget this is one heavy car and takes a lot to push, it will not eat up Vegas with a 600 inch Keith black like it used to anymore.
But I have moved on from the time eating money grinding days of running in the pro class and just out to cruise and have some fun these days. :upsidedow
