How many of you when you feel sick "google" your symptoms?

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

How many of ya are guilty of this?

I was on webmd or one of those sites and its amazing that your "symptoms" can lead you to have such a wide array of ailments ...

Google or WebMD.

fatfoo 10-21-2009 06:00 PM

Sure why not. Google the symptoms. Better idea to talk to a doctor, though.

Bman 10-21-2009 06:11 PM

Yeah I feel like"House" now. Who needs a Dr these days lol

okny 10-21-2009 06:13 PM

Because most doctors are retarded. I had an ear ache went in told the doctor exactly what was wrong, said I had one before I know what it was, I just need a prescription for some penicillin to get rid of it, he said Ok, came back did some tests and then said "yeah, you got an ear infection" I had to pay him $150 for him to tell me the same exact thing I told him when I came in the office.

And oddly House did an episode on that. It did not help the patient.

Sweet - yup he is retarded for checking his work. Especially in a world where it is way to fucking common that many infections are resistant to numerous antibiotics. The testing really confirms which one will work best and list some others as well. They can tell by looking inside about if you have one. But yeah never mind he is a retard, and you got lucky it just needed penicillin. Always so easy to second guess and judge. Wonder what you would of said a week if he gave in that day, then a week or two latter after it did not work and you find out you have a MRSA infection or just a resistant infection in your ear.

I personally do not google symptoms. I will google things I am told I have as well as medications I am told to take. I avoid many sites as well. Though I just as often pull down a book off the shelf when it comes to medicines.

ztik 10-22-2009 12:26 AM

Google is far more educated than doctors are

Most doctors only know what they have seen or what they have learned

Being able to search what 100's of thousands of doctors have seen / learned is much better than 1

They also meaning doctors have been trained to tune out the static and shit that is either bat shit crazy or highly unlikely. The same doctors not only have access to the google, they get peer reviewed magazines, websites, and well more fucking information than us unless we really search it out all of the time.

No since in debating though. Have already learned very hard, especially over the past couple years that doing so on here is fucking pointless. It used to be fun, now it is like pissing in the wind with an electric fence behind you.

Darkland 10-22-2009 01:33 AM

Many of the posts in this thread really show the ignorance that the internet generates. Seems everybody is an expert at everything these days, who needs years of school and targeted education.

I'm so very, very happy I get to tell you what I won't be able to tell patients like you when I get them: you're a fucking imbecile :)

There are a number of things you could have had:
  • acute otitis media - middle ear infection, extremely common, usually responds well to antibiotics.
  • otitis media with effusion, could result from barotrauma, allergies or aom - quite common, can lead to hearing loss, antibiotics won't do shit. If resulting from allergies, antihistamines might help.
  • acute mastoiditis - mild versions often occur with aom and will go away with antibiotics, but severe versions can also result which have the potential to kill or paralyze you if surgery isn't performed.

And that's ignoring quite a few other options which, while highly unlikely, are quite serious. For example, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, ossifying fibroma, fibrosarcoma, etc. are all things you'd probably want to get spotted early on.

But maybe you'd prefer it if doctors decided to automatically assume the most common cause without actually having a good look first? Just prescribe antibiotics without a proper diagnosis? The type of thing that would virtually guarantee that 50 years from now, virtually every bacterium in existence will be resistant to antibiotics?

I have to wonder... if a doctor overlooked something big, which caused permanent damage or even death in you or any of your loved ones, would you consider "Well, the patient googled his symptoms and was pretty sure it was something else" a good excuse?

CunningStunt 10-22-2009 02:03 AM

LOL. Yes. And you end up more paranoid you're going to die, than a visit to the doctor ever would.

Best to always get a medical opinion.

Reminds me of one of the recent House shows called "Epic Fail" - It's on Hulu. Features a guy who likes to Google his own symptoms. :1orglaugh

Gear down big rig.

I'm a very healthy person, rarely get sick, hate going to the doctor because I think its retarded to get charged insane prices for something I already know.

GET THAT, I ALREADY KNEW WHAT I HAD. Call me an imbecile all you want, but until you retarded mother fuckers can actually do what you're tons of schooling says you should be able to do, then I will take more responsibility in believing what you say.

You know how many times I've been to a doctor or a family member has and they FUCKED shit up because they are retarded as a bag of fucking sand?

My father died of a heart attack that could have been prevented if the retarded doctors he visited actually knew their heads from their asses.

He was complaining of chest pains that were almost like acid reflux but he wasn't sure, said he'd get it after eating spicy foods or something, so he choked it up to acid reflux, but also wasn't sure so he went to an oh so bright doctor, and the doctor said yeah, that's all it was...

Well after he died, a doctor who obviously knew what he was doing actually proved that those 2 to 3 times a week he'd have "acid reflux" were actually mild heart attacks that he was having FOR A FUCKING YEAR STRAIGHT.

Oh, and also when a friend of mine was going in for her last checkup before giving birth the retarded doctor broke her water and didn't even notice it, and then when she was having bad contractions for 2 days straight he said he couldn't do anything until her water broke, so she waited and waited watching it, almost lost her child.

So, how about you imbeciles actually do what you're fucking supposed to do before you call us names for actually trusting a search engine over your stupid fucking "I have a piece of paper that I paid for, so obviously I know what I'm doing!" tards.

jact 10-22-2009 03:35 PM

I have a lot of health complications and I've been to just about every type of specialist you can imagine. The only way I'm able to get into the proper specialists half the time is using web resources to piece together the puzzle and connect the dots for my GP.

Naechy 10-22-2009 03:39 PM

Your stupidity is overwhelming.

Yes, sometimes doctors screw up, and a few doctors are incompetent. The same goes for lawyers, programmers, electricians, pilots, engineers, accountants, plumbers, pharmacists, and virtually every other profession in the entire fucking world.

The difference between you and a doctor (or pilot, engineer, lawyer, etc.) is that the doctor has had years and years of training, as well as years of experience. And guess what - he can use Google too. But not only that, he'll have access to a number of peer-reviewed medical (UpToDate, Clinical Evidence, The Cochrane Library, etc.), which are quite a bit more reliable than anything you're likely to find on Google. You could access those too, though... if you were willing to spend a few thousand bucks a year on it.

And even then, you'd lack knowledge of medical terminology, specific symptoms to look for, experience with various manifestations of specific disorders, and the opportunity to discuss specific cases with other doctors.

But hey - why do you need a prescription, anyway? Just google how to produce the medicine google prescribed. Of course, you'll need to google any possible patents on the medicine, because you wouldn't want to get sued for patent infringement - googling patent law to defend yourself in court would be a bother, after all.

And who needs that when you could spend that time relaxing in the house you googled how to build, or maybe even taking a plane you googled how to fly to a nice tropical island for a relaxing vacation?

When you're relaxing on the beach, maybe you'll finally find the time to finally create that book you've always wanted to write: "The Age of Google: why education is now obsolete".

If it mentions on the back that you're an expert googler, I'm sure everyone will be forced to take you seriously.

Imbecile :2 cents:
