Google Launches Their Own DNS Service

I'm personally sticking with OpenDNS for the time being but this is interesting.

So that's who bought my IPs....

The internet === Google

They will pretty much be their own private public self-supporting global internet very shortly....

QFT. I seriously think Google is trying to snag as much of online info as possible to finally, one day, get rid of link-based systems of determining Site Trust/Authority level.

Talk about an end run against web spam, SEO as we currently know it, and their competition.

OK, fuck it, I'm going into beta test mode - that is too damn nuts...

its only a matter of time before they offer their own ISP

Agent 488 12-03-2009 02:29 PM

just a matter of time before they build their own groom computer.

TidalWave 12-03-2009 02:34 PM

its 90ms for me from my house in socal, so no point in using! 90ms will make it slower than my ISP's or Verizons (4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1)

Klen 12-03-2009 03:00 PM

Damn i want those ip adresses

Les Grossman 12-03-2009 03:16 PM

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 23ms, Maximum = 27ms, Average = 25ms

That's how I access the internet. Through the toilet bowl. Using the TTTB transmission protocol.

I'm trying it out. So far pretty speedy.

They could be doing something unorthodox like routing the same IP block to multiple destinations. BGP routing will generally prefer the fewest hops.

BTW, Mountain View CA is just the administrative address for that block - doesn't mean that traffic necessarily terminates there.

Put it back on, I think there's more to it than just a better search algorithm...

Google's accelerator was a bit of a half-assed flop, DNS is much more simple for the average person to change... and once it's done they'll probably just forget that G is seeing every new site they're connecting to. :helpme

rowan 12-03-2009 08:56 PM

You can bet that future installs of Chrome are going to politely ask if you'd like to switch your DNS to Google. :2 cents:

fris 12-03-2009 09:27 PM

i switched to google dns today

Thurbs 12-03-2009 09:54 PM

V_RocKs 12-04-2009 02:02 AM

They just want to see where smart people shop.

Sin_Vraal 12-04-2009 07:18 AM

Nah, its not that fast... they just advertise the same IP address in multiple places...

That same ip address can be in France, USA, australia, etc.
