How fast was your modem?

I started out on a brand spanking new 1200baud. I loved that puppy!

I used some software from some google code spot to make this so you can reminisce.

This is today's blog on yesterday's technology:

Before you load the first one. Read this: I want you to WAIT until the toplist loads before you go to the next one. It will take a bit to load. But it will be a nice benchmark for the later links. Also, keep in mind. This is just the text. This isn't going to load the pictures. Only the HTML.

1200baud:

Then my I got my pops hooked on Prodigy and he sprung for a 9600baud:

What a great dad!

Next the 28.8K next Xmas... sweet! You can almost hear the telephone line sizzling.

The good ole' 56K

Remember, you still have surfers using these... though they probably don't have credit cards or checking accounts. But that is what phone pay is for right?

And finally DSL at 768K

I miss that slow modem. We used to have to think... Now we can just splog shit and throw up pussy pics and not give a shit about nothin'....

V_RocKs 12-05-2009 01:58 AM

Also keep in mind, 56K modems only ran at 8000baud. The rest of the speed is compression. That is how little bandwidth your copper phone line could provide.

Vjo 12-05-2009 04:43 AM

I had an acer with I think 14.4. Things were so slow in them days (the midish 90's) I don't know how anyone made anything.

But oh yeah modems.. beep beeeep beeep beeep schwinnng waaaaaahhhhhh

ok I think I am on. Yes I am on. Enjoy that speedy web experience.

Acer 70 Mhz processor and a whopping 500M HD. :) Let me at that XPics. hehe I'm armed and ready as an Acer wm. lol

Vjo 12-05-2009 05:01 AM

Actually now I'm thinking the Acer had built in 2400 (rings a bell) and I think I went and bought the exterior modem and went up to 14.4 then bought a diff modem and went to 28.8. Had opf course good old windows 3.1 I believe.

It's like saying there is the gold now go get it with this slow ass computer. Of course you only needed a few pics on a site and cha ching but back then you had to buy the pics for like $80 for one dvd of a few pics and it took forever to upload and dl. Memories.

Vjo 12-05-2009 05:08 AM

Oops that would be one cd of a few pics not dvd. :)

okny 12-05-2009 05:09 AM

Damn that brings back memories it was 14.4 waiting while sites would load was awesome made want to take a nap :1orglaugh

Vjo 12-05-2009 05:14 AM

Yep the surfer had to wait for that pic to slowly, slowly load.. work its way line by line of pixels.. hehe they were pumped to see anything after all that waiting.

All of the above. Did not vote.

ArsewithClass 12-05-2009 05:18 AM

My first line was a 56k moving up to 2mb, then 10, now im on 20.

I wondered about 50mb. Its great to have the best, however, I dont think I would notice any difference.

kane 12-05-2009 05:58 AM

My first modem ever was 1200 baud. Then eventually I got a 56K modem. Where I lived the phone lines were so old and shitty it never ran at more than about half its potential. I was in this business almost a full year before cable internet was available where I lived. Once I got it I wondered how I ever got anything done before.

Bored 12-05-2009 06:04 AM

get off the phone!! someones trying to call into my BBS!

seeandsee 12-05-2009 06:08 AM

RS-232C serial port and the telephone interface II was my modem. Which was "up to 300 Baud" lol

I originally had this cassette bugger and no floppy drives.

Ahh the memories...

Big Chad 12-05-2009 12:12 PM

Started with 1200 Baud.. Then had (6) 28.8 modems on my bbs. Cost $250 a piece! lol That's when a scanner cost $1500+. Also had a satellite dish feeding fido net groups. Also had 6 6 disk changers for porn :)

Where I am at now...

What is the real difference between 30mb and 15mb? If you are not a file sharer?

When I went from shotgunning two modems to my first DSL at 384K or some shit it was like.. Hmm.. Free vs. paying $50 for twice the speed.. Hmm... Why did I sign that 1 year contract?

JD 12-05-2009 04:14 PM

my first modem was 28.8kps... ahh... AOL.... beeeeeeeeeeee.... SCRERRRRRRRRRRr :chirp: EEEWwwwWEEEEEE.... YOU'VE GOT MAIL!

CYF 12-05-2009 06:20 PM

docputer 12-05-2009 09:55 PM

My first was a 300 on a commodore Vic20 and a TRS80

woj 12-05-2009 09:59 PM

billywatson 12-05-2009 10:00 PM

1992: 386 DX 40 with a 4 megs of RAM (paid $50 per meg cause there was a "fire" in the warehouse in Japan where it was made), 250 meg HD, and 14.4 modem. LOL

Iron Fist 12-05-2009 10:10 PM

Man... I remember playing around with my "Leading Edge" computer... 486 DX2... that's when I think I really got into the whole world of computers and BBSes.

dodger21 12-05-2009 10:29 PM

my packard bell had a 1200 i spent like $300 on! lol! i got a boner once i saved up enough money to buy a co-processor.

a bigger hardon when i got my first meg of ram and was able to play kings quest.
1 meg cost me (well my parents) $200. my old man was pissed.

rowan 12-05-2009 10:33 PM

1984, 300bps accoustic coupled modem connected to a printer terminal... no green screen, it just printed out everything that came down the line. :1orglaugh

Sometimes it feels like I'm on the 2009 equivalent of 300bps, my DSL syncs cleanly at 8Mbps but the bandwidth is artificially limited to 3Mbps due to congestion. And some of you guys have 100Mbit links to your home desktop...

NaughtyRob 12-05-2009 10:37 PM

9600 0r 14.4 can't remember.

NaughtyRob 12-05-2009 10:38 PM

Yeah I remember the days of waiting like 2 minutes for one picture to load.

I owned an LE 386 with the math coprocessor. Windows 3.1 was an experience...

I actually preferred DOS until windows 98.

MindWaste 12-06-2009 06:02 AM

MindWaste 12-06-2009 06:07 AM

My first computer dident even have a hard drive.. you had to load like up to 7 dos disks depending on the version dos before you could put any other program on.. so basicly it just held dos inn memory then you put the game or what ever in and play.. no modem nothing..

The Duck 12-06-2009 07:24 AM

Psylocybe 12-09-2009 10:13 AM

i remember saving up for the new fancy 56k modem so i could play quake, my ping rocked everybody elses and I was team deathmatch champion for a month, ahhh happy days

bDok 12-09-2009 10:31 AM

I started with a 1200 I borrowed from a friend. Then I got a 2400 baud from another friend.

Purchased a shitty 9600 that when I was running a BBS I had to write my on connection routines as the ones that came with Hermes II didn't cover it properly.

The big day came when I finally upgraded to a hayes 14.4 modem. From there I always got hayes. Upgraded a bunch more and eventually had multiple phones lines for my BBS.

Ran bulletin boards WWIV, Renegade, and Hermes II. Fun stuff. Guy I went to school with was Lord Jazz from ACiD so all my lovely ansi menu systems were done by him. lol

Was so stoked back then with shell accounts, fido net... too funny.

0 day ftw!

First one I(family) had was an 14.4 in 1994 when I was 11 years old, but had a whooping 56k in '99 when I got into porn at 16 :)

96ukssob 12-09-2009 11:25 AM
