How many people here have disability, life, and health insurance & retirement ?

Just curious how many (US) people have:

Disability Insurance
Life Insurance
Health Insurance
and/or set a side a portion of money for your retirement ?

Deej 12-13-2009 11:54 PM

Only time Ive used health insurance it ends up costing me more without having insurance... so I have since decided i dont need it right now.

ztik 12-13-2009 11:54 PM

I have none of those but will be 100% fine for retirement anytime i want to start it

vapewiz 12-14-2009 12:06 AM

That's scary too.

I have all of the above. I can't image not having any of them personally. The one thing that people usually over look the most is disability insurance. For about what you pay a month on car insurance to protect a 30K-40K car you can pay about the same amount of money to protect 100K a year of income for the rest of your life, if you were ever to become disabled... but i bet 99% of the people here have car insurance and no disability insurance...

lets see total the car = insurance pays you $40K, the same car accident disables you, you lose your income and screwed the rest of your life. Having disability insurance for the same costs, 100K year x 30-40 years depending on your age.... no brainer.

I have none of the above

Robbie 12-14-2009 12:24 AM

I have two 1 milllon dollar life insurance policies on me to protect my family. Full health insurance for me and my family. Mortgage insurance (I still have $700,000 on my mortgage...just got this latest house last year). I also have a handful of smaller whole life insurance policies on myself. I can't remember all of them but it's several of them at around 25 K each. So yeah, I'm insured up the ass. :)

Just hope my bitch doesn't get smart and decide to collect early. Keeps me working hard that's for sure. Got to keep being worth more to her alive than dead. lol

I have health and dental
I have an SEP plan
No disability insurance

No life insurance. I have no one to leave it to; I have no family to leave anything to and no dependants. I have distant family but I wouldn't want to leave anything to them, I'm not close them at all and barely even talk to them. I don't ever want a family either, so why would I need life insurance? Who would be my benefactor? No one depends on me. Only I depend on myself. Life insurance is not necessary for me.

marcop 12-14-2009 12:30 AM

What do you care? Are you an insurance salesman?

bausch 12-14-2009 12:32 AM

Life insurance is only for people who have families or kids or dependents. Not everyone cares about having a family or even wants one. Some people want to be single forever and don't want a family. Some people dislike kids. ok? Jeeez.

this made me feel sad for you, but I guess everyone is different. I don't mean it as an insult

Sounds like you got it covered right. Insurance does suck, but I can't imagine not having it. Hard to sleep at night.

Only thing you need is disability. You know where you get hurt real bad where you can't work but don't die. I had no idea how cheap disability insurance is. I have 100K a year of income protected for the rest of my life for about $200 a month. In my case if I get hurt and can't work my income goes away, my family is fucked. Not to mention if my disability caused me to have more expenses. The other cool thing about my disability is that it acts like a retirement plan to some extent, if you don't use it after so many years you can get the money back.

Disability Insurance
Life Insurance
Decapitation Insurance (in Mexico)
Liver Insurance (in Mexico)

woj 12-14-2009 11:24 AM

I don't really need any of those... yet...
I'm still young, probably in 5-10 years, I'll start looking into getting insurance coverage...

I have all of the above including a very good CPA. Health insurance I would never do without. Found that out the hard way many years ago when my appendix burst and I wasn't covered.

As far as disability, life insurance, and a good CPA those are no brainers.

Sly 12-14-2009 11:30 AM

I have 2 of the 4. Don't need life insurance right now, disability insurance I think would be difficult.

Some of the responses in this thread indicate why many Americans will still not have health insurance after final passage of the current bills.

candyflip 12-14-2009 11:32 AM

I've got all my bases covered. With a family, you have to be prepared.

datatank 12-14-2009 11:34 AM

How much is Disability Insurance ?

BillyHoe 12-14-2009 11:42 AM

I have all of the above. For those who say they're too young for life/disability insurance remember one important factor. The younger you are the cheaper your rate is, for the same coverage.
I have over a million dollars in coverage and I pay peanuts for it, cause I've had it for 10 years. Had I got it this year I would have been paying almost 4 times the amount I'm paying now, for 2/3 the coverage.
Something to think about. ;)

1m does not seem like it would go very far when you are dead

L-Pink 12-14-2009 11:54 AM

I haven't actually worked since 1996 (investments) and am currently uninsurable.

Depends on your health, age, what type of work you do (if it is high risk or not), how much income you are insuring etc... My situation, i'm early 30's great health and was able to insured 100K a year till I am 65, for about $200 a month.

It was really easy to get disability. No different really than getting health insurance with the addition of having to prove your income. Disability insurance is to protect your income so you can only protect a certain % of what you make, any amount you want (basically what you feel you need to live off of) but you can not do it for more than you make.
