Pepsi is not advertising during the Super Bowl

They are moving away from "singular events" when advertising... Good idea?

"In a daring move, PepsiCo is planning to sit on the sidelines during Super Bowl XLIV, ending a 23-year streak of advertising during the big game.

Over the past 23 years, Pepsi has used the Super Bowl to launch some of its most memorable advertising, including ads featuring celebrities such as Britney Spears.

The National Football League championship has long been a key part of Pepsi's advertising strategy, with the beverage company using the event as a way to roll out some of its most memorable advertising, including spots with celebrities such as Britney Spears and Cindy Crawford."

All the athletes drink Gatorade and Pepsi owns Gatorade, so they'll be advertising, just not directly.

I think it's a great move. It's not like Pepsi is brand new product looking to gain new customers. Pretty much at this point, most people prefer one or the other and there hasn't been a whole lot of change in either product. So it makes sense not to shell out the huge dollars just to market to a specific audience. If you think about it, they have already advertised because when Coke is shown during the Super Bowl, people will think "oh yeah, Pepsi isn't advertising this year" and it cost Pepsi nothing.

How much press is Pepsi getting by NOT advertising this year? Sounds like they are just getting all the press they need and not having to pay a dime for it.

I've never bought into the "you have to watch the super bowl commercials" hype. The day after it'll be easier to watch them online.

I get food during commercials :)
