St. Clair Shores police released the names of three Detroit men who died in a crash on I-94 after they fled police after they stole $45 worth of Axe beauty products from a St. Clair Shores drugstore, investigators said.
Gordon Eugene Wright, 56, was driving the Ford Fusion that crashed as it sped the wrong way on I-94 westbound Thursday night. His passengers, Raymond Lee Lewis and Quatilious Combs, both 53, also were killed, Lt. Michael Walleman said. He said Wright and Lewis have a family connection, but he was unsure what it was.
Walleman said the trio was riding in Combs? car, which Combs reported stolen at gunpoint Jan. 8 in Detroit. The car was listed as stolen at the time of the accident, he said.
?Even if they robbed the place and got away with a million dollars, it wasn't worth their lives," St. Clair Shores Lt. George Sobah said this morning.
Shoppers pointed out the men to store employees at the CVS store at 11 Mile and Harper about 11 p.m. Thursday. The trio intentionally ran their car into a responding police cruiser on 11 Mile outside the store driveway. The trio then took off and was pursued by the officer, who was not hurt, Walleman said.
The trio sped down 11 Mile to Little Mack, where the officer ended the pursuit because the trio was driving more than 90 m.p.h., Walleman said.
"For a retail fraud, it wasn?t worth risking people?s lives," Sobah said. "The officer that was chasing actually stopped chasing."
The officer saw the Ford Fusion get on I-94 traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes and radioed ahead to Roseville Police. Within minutes, the Fusion clipped a minivan, then was hit by a flatbed tow truck near 12 Mile, according to Michigan State Police.
The drivers of the other two vehicles were not seriously hurt.
Earlier this week, two teens died after fleeing Roseville police in a stolen truck during rush hour on Wednesday. Witnesses said they saw the teens break into a truck at 13 Mile and Gratiot.
