I try to help out in my area. I think there is enough poverty here to keep us busy before we give aid to Liberia...

The problem is their government, but the people bear some blame because they tolerate it.

I gave a modest donation to the Red Cross for Haiti and I trust they will use it to help people.

There is truth to this, however it is their government who has kept them from evolving. Where you find the most corruption, you will find the most poverty and animal like behavior. Color has nothing to do with it, it just so happens that this sort of thing happens in mostly black countries.

Here in the US, we look down at fast food jobs. Yet you take one of these guys off the streets, give him a job at Burger King, and he'll be the happiest person in the world - he'll have more money than ever before, running water, a bed to sleep in, and even cable TV. These people live like this because they have no other options.

I am confident to say that the average mentality and decency in even the worst part of the US will trump these slum conditions portrayed in this thread.

How exactly would you go about improving the conditions in a place like Liberia? Any aid you dump in there will somehow be stolen by a select few tribal leaders who are in power. The amount of chaos and greed that persists there will prevent anyone from being able to help anyone.

The whole concept of aid for 3rd world countries is very discouraging to me. Because, for the most part, it is all going to make a few select people very rich, the bottomfeeders are not going to benefit for shit from most of the organized aid.

Do I have the means to pick up a backpack, go over there and help instead of playing the remote keyboard warrior? Yes, I do. But do I wish to end up with a machete splitting my skull? Not so much.

Not as bad. In the favelas there is order within the favela. Yes, the people will kill you, but there is order on the inside. There are also schools inside, medicine, churches and everything else they need to live within. A fevela is poor, but it is generally a self contained system, dangerous as it may be to outsiders, but it is not on the same level as Africa.

The other difference is, when you come down the hill and exit the favela, you enter real life and civilization. In places like Liberia or Sierra Leone, there is no exit. It's chaos, with no order or law, mostly violent and extreme poverty, as far as the eye can see and then some. It is a nightmare you can never wake from.

Work with an agency if you feel the desire to do something as stupid as that, but whatever you do there will not make a difference.
