What were you doing when you heard the news that Kurt Cobain killed himself?

I was at the end of the Hall having lunch with other grad students at UTexas

Poindexterity 01-27-2010 01:23 AM

showing up for school senior year of high school.
there was this really dumb kid who had kind of lost it a bit at the news and carved the name "KIRK" into his arm with a knife.

dude actually thought the man's name was "Kirk Cobain"

hypedough 01-27-2010 01:24 AM

Too young to really care :( Loved his music postmortem.

Domain Diva 01-27-2010 01:43 AM

the Shemp 01-27-2010 02:25 AM

i was 44 and working at SFO airport..too old to care, hehe ..

MikeSmoke 01-27-2010 03:32 AM

Whatever it was....it was the exact same thing that I was doing before I heard the news, and the exact same thing that I was doing after I heard the news. News that's unimportant to my life usually doesn't make me stop what I'm doing.

quiet 01-27-2010 03:36 AM

first year of uni, with my gf. watched the suicide note, and the endless music that follow on the canadian version of mtv (much music).

Va2k 01-27-2010 03:38 AM

I just dropped off a Pt at hospital and was taken ambulance back to Hq when I heard it. Was like omg.. Sucked.

k0nr4d 01-27-2010 03:41 AM

I have no idea who that is, so i guess "reading this thread" would be my answer...

the real magoo 01-27-2010 04:09 AM

PornMD 01-27-2010 04:15 AM

I was living my life and not committing suicide like a pussy.

kane 01-27-2010 04:18 AM

I was walking into a big bookstore. Out front there were a bunch of news stands and the headline of the paper said, "Nirvana singer found dead." I bought the paper and went inside just to make sure I was reading it right. I was pretty bummed. I was a big fan of theirs and knew Kurt was a troubled guy. It is always sad to me when people who have problems end up succumbing to the them and can't find a way out.

mrwilson 01-27-2010 04:32 AM

Here right now, didn't know he was dead :|

But then i have never heard of him either...

ErectMedia 01-27-2010 05:35 AM

SomeCreep 01-27-2010 05:41 AM

i forgot

smutnut 01-27-2010 05:48 AM

I'm not sure of the date anymore than I am sure of the date we find out Michael Jackson liked to sleep with little kids.

I can remember a court date of mine being canceled because the courts were closed when the World Trade Centers were bombed though and having to return home to finish watching it on television, but maybe that was more important.

Oh, I can remember watching OJ on television with the police cruisers behind him, but don't know if that would have the same impact today due to all the reality TV

StaceyJo 01-27-2010 06:17 AM

Hmmm... reading this thread?

Pleasurepays 01-27-2010 06:29 AM

right after he killed himself... i was watching the retarded insanity in Seattle where schools were in a full blow panic that kids were going to start shooting themselves right and left. suicide counselors were being dispatched to public schools, constant tv ads/reports etc. i just remember that i kept thinking "you people are fucking up a perfect chance to clean up the gene pool and i don't appreciate it"

czarina 01-27-2010 06:31 AM

can't remember

Jman 01-27-2010 06:36 AM

Never cared for grunge music.

Martin 01-27-2010 06:42 AM

Don't remember.. I just remember not being too surprised by it.

Jarmusch 01-27-2010 06:43 AM

Opening a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

LeCoq 01-27-2010 07:04 AM

Watching the news when a special bulletin came up... Sad day for sure.

Fletch XXX 01-27-2010 07:08 AM

L-Pink 01-27-2010 07:13 AM

Sarah_Jayne 01-27-2010 07:20 AM

I was a junior in high school. I had just walked in the door after getting off the school bus. I turned on the TV, which I had left on MTV from the morning. I was having my post-school pee when I heard Tabitha Soren break in with an MTV News alert. That would have been about 4pm est and I think it was fairly new news at that point.

Then the next day at gym class, I remember having a big debate with two girls about the merits and lack thereof of suicide.

The whole thing is why I don't like Andy Rooney too, btw.

PR_Glen 01-27-2010 07:59 AM

wow it takes a thread like this to flush out the cynical doesn't it?

I was ditching school to help my friends dad in his shop for some dumb reason, and both me and my friend, who were huge fans at the time, turned on the radio and they announced it on there right away. It took a piece out of me. It was because of that band that I ever picked up a guitar in the first place, despite Cobains lack of skills it inspired me to learn myself.

Maybe I was more impressionable then, but I really don't see many inspiring things in music today.

TheDoc 01-27-2010 08:02 AM

I faintly remember Nirvana growing up... we had no MTV and one alt-music radio station, everything else was country or classic rock.

I'm pretty sure 99% of the kids in my area, had no idea who in hell he was until after he offed himself.

tranza 01-27-2010 08:11 AM

I have no idea..

This may be my favorite answer so far. :thumbsup

Me, I don't recall what I might have been doing at that exact moment but in '94 I was 31, still working at the hospital, running two side businesses out of my home, and paid only marginal attention to what the modern day "Sid and Nancy" were doing. I seem to recall not being all that surprised.

Always liked Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots better than Nirvana.

lacuna 01-27-2010 08:24 AM

He was a douche. Nirvana played my college. They went the whole night without playing "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and then during their encore, they riffed the opening. The crowd went absolutely wild.

Kurt laughed, and the band switched to something else. They never did play it.

Got Porn? 01-27-2010 08:25 AM

It was spring break my freshman year of high school. A bunch of us were at a friends house b/c his parents were out of town. I remember we were all shocked when we saw Kurt Loader reporting his suicide on MTV. That night we had a keg party and I remember get really drunk and vomiting :repuke

In my school, which was very average white America, they had reached the level of being a very big deal with a certain group of people but most people were just slightly aware of them. Also, the people in my school that were big time into them were generally the artsy weird kids (I was on the fringe of that group so I knew them pretty well) that the jocks made fun of regularly. It wasn't until after he killed himself that football players and stuff had heard of him as more than just an occasional name on MTV. Then they became obsessed by them. It is fair to say though that at the time he killed himself they were on the up anyway and probably would have broken through that barrier anyway but just not with as much as a sudden impact.

Oh and I agree that Pearl Jam was a better band but they were also pretty different bands that just happen to be around at the same time. The jocks and stuff loved Pearl Jam at the same time they artsy kids were into Nirvana.

alexchechs 01-27-2010 09:27 AM

Getting ready for class at home when it came on the news. Ditched class that day and listened to Bleach.
