What do people charge these days for "Fixing Pc issues" ???

Reason I ask is that for my cousin I help him out over the years for no charge be it simple shit or complete reformat....but he decided to give my number to someone who needs help.... ie: "my computer isnt working i think it has virus bla bla bla " so I decided to tell him to bring over the laptop and ill look at it...

What are people charging to fix issues such as reformat and so on....

For family I don't mind doing it but others my time cost $$$

100 bucks an hour and some lube

Nodtveidt 01-28-2010 09:44 PM

When I worked as a tech in the late 90s, I charged $25/hour. I'm sure it'd be double that nowadays, but hardly anyone has need for a computer tech anymore when they can just throw it away and buy another one from walmart for a pittance.

$100-$200 for a reformat and shit.

I would do it for a 24 pack or a few packs of smokes if they bring you more clientele then I would start charging.

moeloubani 01-28-2010 11:40 PM

i charge close friends 1 joint smokage as i fix it and a bottle of water

non-friends i prefer not to fix their stuff because people are just dumb when it comes to computers

HerPimp 01-28-2010 11:51 PM

Put the CD in drive and reinstall operating system, don't fuck around trying to fix anything. I think $40 is fair. If they want to play that whole "I don't want to lose my info" charge $200.

My assistant's husband has his own business doing pc "repair." His rate is $120/hr but he provides a lot of free support time when people have follow up questions.

Seems like he is always on the phone, so he earns it.

I have paid $200 recently... But it was not a PC. It was a server with RedHat Linux and they had to recover data from a crashed HDD... Really physically crashed.

Redrob 01-29-2010 12:44 AM

Ouch.....crashed server hard drives really suck.

Mine don't. I learned a long time ago, if its got tits or electronics your going to have problems with it. My servers have 2 drives, one is the main drive, one is a mirror drive. One goes tits up, there is one that still has the mirror and a backup. There is also a weekly backup here. I have seen so many webmasters and sponsor cry over a drive crash. There is no excuse for not having at least two drives in a machine. To me a sponsor that say's " we had a drive crash but we had a mirror drive" is a responcable sponsor. Ones that say "we had a drive crash we are rebuilding what we can" is a bad sponsor. This is our business a backup of what we have is a must... I know I am anal about backups.

I charge flat rate of $60 an hour to people who are not my friends. Most computer stores around here charge $100 an hour or more. I don't do a lot of computer work anymore, because I flat out hate computers. Then again I owned a computer training biz and I spent more time on the phone answering questions than I did getting paid, once you start working on computers and word gets out. You end up being to busy to do webmaster work.

No doubt, my charging structure is all wrong! I usually get a good homecooked meal and a few drinks, maybe an evening of entertainment. :1orglaugh

I would think $50-$100 depending on the problem... hooking up wireless networks or a pritner or something is not too bad... but cleaning up pc from viruses is always a headache, these idiots always have dozens of different infections, it's surprising the pc even boots up...

Vendzilla 01-29-2010 09:32 AM

I do it for family and friends, anyone else, it's what do they want to trade. I grew up on the barter system, if all they have is cash, $50 , most of the time it's just running virus software and cleaning up the start menu and deleting programs they don't use anymore
