So Apple Hates Flash? What to use for video player for embedding on em?

As for Adobe, Jobs said they are lazy and Jobs blames Adobe for a buggy implementation of Flash on the Mac as one of the reasons they won't support it.

Steve Jobs: "Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash, he says. The world is moving to HTML5."
He also slams google and Blu-ray... Sounds like Steve is getting cranky in his old age and making some serious mistakes, although Flash does crash all the time on macs so he does have a point although sounds like he's burning that adobe bridge.

So now that we know we won't see flash on iphone/ipad, WTF are we supposed to use to embed videos, is there anyway to implement h.264 vids as easy as with a flv player that lets you skip in the time line?

Porn Grounds 01-31-2010 08:45 AM

html5? :winkwink:

stickyfingerz 01-31-2010 08:47 AM

haha Funny stuff.. Maybe they should figure out how to make a mac not crash when using flash? :1orglaugh

Trax 01-31-2010 10:14 AM

i have a brand new macbook pro (2.8ghz 4gb ram) running 10.6 and i haven't gone more than 2 days without having a flash ad, banner or element on a page freeze, prompt me for a stop script or just crash my web browser....whether it be safari, firefox, or chrome.

you just may have not attributed the problem to flash...check out your logs..it will tell you different.

and sticky idiot. adobe should figure out how to properly develop flash for the mac os (start by abandoning carbon) not the other way around. its not apple's burden to make flash work.

html5 will soon kill flash anyways. anyone who has their doubts just look at Google's new Google Voice HTML5 app.

bye bye flash

Klen 01-31-2010 11:21 AM

Huh,question is will html5 be finished in next 10 years.

i have my doubts, and looking at googles new voice app didn't convince me in any shape or form that flash will be vanishing, furthermore i'm a tad confused as to the correlation , but then again it's early.

Maybe that should be a hint.. I have a pc that never crashes from flash..

You are trying to stick nitro's in a tractor :winkwink:

fatfoo 01-31-2010 11:33 AM

Bugs. Problems with it being buggy. Understandable.

digitaldivas 01-31-2010 01:56 PM

I am on a mac, and I convert .h264 to .flv no prob. I have Flash app from adobe and it authors fine, etc, etc. what the hell are you people talking about?!? Maybe its the intel chip, daughter board config? snow leopard? I dunno, i am on OSX 10.5.8, maybe i'll stay that way for awhile, jeez.

digitaldivas 01-31-2010 02:00 PM

btw, Mozilla recently said the same thing about browser crashes and Adobe Flash, and that’s on both platforms.

JD 01-31-2010 02:11 PM

they don't want flash on iPhones because it'll compete directly with their app store.

fris 01-31-2010 02:12 PM

just link to the mp4 file, and the iphone/ipod/ipad will handle the rest

Wait... so the OS touted as the "it just works" OS won't work with the most adapted form of media in the world?

http://www.adobe.com/products/player...s/flashplayer/

All my windows machines have NO problem with playing flash, and don't crash when viewing flash etc. Not to mention windows has to work with a shit load of more applications, devices, drivers, while being non proprietary and still we have to listen to the mac fan boys banter... :1orglaugh

Im SOOOOO sure that if windows suddenly stopped working with flash the Mac elite crew would be talking about how their snoot fest works with anything and everything, blah fuckin blah...

Cult people make me giggle..

In all fairness, whenever my browser crashes, or the mac freezes, then the ensuing debug report that is sent to Apple *always* has Adobe flash appearing in the 2nd or 3rd backtrace line, which brought me to the conclusion that flash is the fault of crashing my browser and my mac.

Well, if you download Flash, you have to download the version corresponding to your OS. Which means, Flash out-of-the-box is not platform independent. Linux had to wait quite a long time for Flash.

So, maybe Adobe just put more effort/manpower into the Windows version because of the much larger user base?

I ain't no Mac Fanboi, but business logic says that you put more effort into what is going to give you the biggest user base :2 cents:

Yes, Darwin Streaming Server will stream your h.264 vids no problem and allow scrubbing too.

Use MP4Box to add interleaving though to allow the scrubbing:

MP4Box -inter 500 <movie>

This is exactly why h.264 is excellent - flash stream or quicktime stream - just roll your own depending on what the client has. iPhone clients frikken love it.

quiet 01-31-2010 03:10 PM

flash pretty much never crashes my mac. hmm.

It's in Beta and you have to just opt in. Once you do so, if the HTML5 version is available, you'll get that everytime. If one isn't, you'll see the Flash Player. Simple as that...and nice too!

hmmm, but the problem is you still need a player to stream the h.264 in, and aren't all the players swf's which is just flash?

borked 01-31-2010 10:38 PM

Why do you need a player? The movie will embed fine with the Quicktime player. Of course, it means the user base needs to have QT installed, just as a flash player requires flash installed.

mayabong 01-31-2010 10:57 PM

maybe its a good thing

If flash worked on i phones, wouldn't we lose lots and lots of our potential mobile customers to free porn tubes? just a thought. I'm happy bout it.. I have a sony Vaio laptop.. it kinda sucks.. its made in china.. the older vaio's were awesome..
