Dedicated server or not dedicated server? Hostgator?

My partner things our mainstream business needs a dedicated server but I think $220.00 is a big difference from $10.00. We get about 5000 impressions a day. He thinks we need it so we can make sure our stuff is backed up everyday and says the IP's will help us with google etc. Any input? Any comments on hostgator?

http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml We were going to get the standard one.

A small VPS?

baddog 02-19-2010 01:13 PM

You do not need a dedicated server to back your stuff up. In fact, having a dedicated server is not going to make a difference as far as that is concerned.

That package looks like a little overkill if you are currently getting by on a $10 plan.

Whats a good method of backing up then?

mkx 02-19-2010 01:19 PM

Hes saying he can't modify the server properties to change the timeout which occurs when trying to manually back it up

Get a server that comes with a control panel like DirectAdmin. Has a blonde-proof backup feature.

I think that is what they call it.

Thanks, think i lured him a way from dedicated for a while, maybe in a year or so. Does it help SEO a lot to have 13 ips?

WebairMetz 02-19-2010 01:24 PM

As mentioned if you are running fine now on the shared plan you do not need to go dedicated just to get backups.

If you do end up looking for a new solution we can help you with a VPS plan that includes free backups/snapshots with plans that are very affordable and include full 24x7x365 support.

Just having the IPs is not enough, but yes, a dedicated IP is better than a shared IP. You do not need a dedicated server to get a dedicated IP.

get a dual core dedicated server for $48/mo. with 10 megs at secured servers, plus all bandwidth is 3.98/meg.

CaroMark 02-19-2010 03:12 PM

If $10/mo in hosting resources is enough then jumping to $220/mo in dedicated hosting certainly isn't a requirement, although there are certainly benefits to having your own dedicated server.

Caro.Net has VPS plans starting as low as $20/mo and Dedicated servers at $80/mo.

When you get ready to make the move hit me up directly as I would certainly like the chance to earn your business.

Thanks in advance,

You could manage that with an equal 10 bucks investment for a vps. Depends what CP you want and how much space/traffic, but still - 10-15 bucks is possible.

For reliability there are 2 things to consider. Backup allows you to roll back to any earlier version or restore everything to a new server should the server die.

However, most VPS systems use redundant RAID and content is automatically duplicated. This protects against hardware failure but not if the server gets messed up from user error or from some kind of hacker.

I had a dedicated with HostGator. They are basically an affiliate of theplanet.com. The server and bandwidth was excellent for the price I paid. But their support was absolutely horrible. If you don't need support they are ok but if you need someone to hold your hand forget about it.

Also, $200/mo sounds like overkill if you are getting by with a $10/mo plan right now. The benefits you mentioned will not be accomplished by getting a dedicated server.

You don't need a dedicated server to have a dedicated IP. You can get that anywhere, even on the cheapest shared hosting solutions.

Hostgator are a fantastic company. I had many years of success with them & can give you only good stories of their service.
I went offline for a matter of less than a day & they refunded a whole month. They had 99% uptime & were 24/7 helpfull!

I would recommend going for a lower package of dedicated server with them as you do not need such a high bandwidth harddrive, or, have a look at www.adulthosting.com as this company is the best in its class. It is in the hyper class!

5000 impressions a day is not much unless this is a video site or tube.
