Is Youtube running out of bandwidth?

Sometimes it's fast as fuck, and the video loads all the way within a few seconds. But most of the time it can't even fucking play a 2 minute video without needing to hit the pause button and waiting for over 5 fucking minutes for it to load. I'm on a 25 megabit fiber connection so the problem isn't here.

It's like I'm watching with a fucking 2400 baud modem or something.

What the hell is up with Youtube? Doesn't Google have the most epic datacenters around? Or are even the most epic datacenters not enough to handle the load?

Barefootsies 02-23-2010 03:57 PM

We see one of these posts every few months.

Footsies, where's the timeline pic? And where's the "Sig Nig" pic? :)

You're letting me down, man.

Andy CHOOPA 02-23-2010 04:24 PM

We're working on upgrading them. Turning up another 80Tbps.

I'm actually the fastest connection on the chart.
My problem with youtube is that it almost always freezes and stops dl'ing half way through the video. I need to refresh and jump to that point in the vid and it's fine. That's probably something wanky on my end though.

maybe, they seem to be enforcing their policy about using too many youtube embeds on a website with very little content besides their embeded videos...especially if you have ads on the website. They really don't want you making money with their contect...of course it is not their content either. :upsidedow

I'm not seeing any issues on several sites that are next to nothing but youtube content. :2 cents:

Maybe they don't care so long as you're monetizing it with Adsense :1orglaugh

It would be too easy to develope a website full of youtube videos, and throw up some softcore sponsor banners, but trust me once your getting a ton of traffic and spent a couple of months placing thousands of embeds up...they can just shut the switch.

I was using some of the youtube racey content and after a couple of weeks they had remove those videos from their website for violation...so all I had was black boxes on my blog. :1orglaugh

Many of the free porn tubes now have partner programs...

That sucks about the YouTube thing. My daddy told me about a time when young people had real problems -- like getting a VietCong bayonet in the esophagus while sleeping in a foxhole.

That said, it definitely sucks to have wait an extra 5 seconds to see a guy get kicked in the nuts by his toddler.

Even though you're on a fast connection, that doesn't mean the problem isn't on your side. Most ISPs have intermittent connectivity issues often, due to network or hardware upgrades. Most people don't notice the downtime because the sites they're visiting happen not to be affected by the maintenance.

Is it just coincidental that out of every tube site I've ever visited, and every site I've ever downloaded from, I've never had even one single instance of a slow down... Except for YouTube. Files download so quickly sometimes I don't even think it would be possible for it to transfer so fast.

This is how it is for me all the time. The one site that gives me issues is YouTube. And the problems that occur are consistent. :2 cents:

so now that you have established youtube is slow sometimes, what do you plan to do about it?

ask for a refund?

MrMaxwell 02-23-2010 09:40 PM

Youtube has been slow, lately
Especially when you try to use it for more than 10 or so minutes
It's like it starts throttling the connection

It gets so bad, I have to watch the lower quality stream, and even then it sometimes slows to a crawl. Then the player gets upset and just completely stops working half of the time if I try to click scroll

And all of this after I heard on here about them building "their own internet" or whatever was going to happen... is google still working on that? All I see is them adding advertisements and using either shitty bandwidth or throttling connections

Of course, cox isn't a genius with their routing, either, but it's just youtube I've been having problems with.. not for a day, a week, but weeks now

bronco67 02-23-2010 09:46 PM

I heard that they still haven't found a way to monetize the 10 billion clicks they get per second.

Vjo 02-23-2010 09:55 PM

No probs here. I'm at 1051 Kbps. MN is at 3312. My isp 765.

Thats bits per sec so I'm 131 KBps which is accurate with my own #s.

95 and 8.7 .. have never seen anything near that slow. I have also dl'd over an hour with no chg.

Joshua G 02-23-2010 10:03 PM

just wait until the web is truly clogged by mobile streams HD streams & god knows what else. all streams will slow to a crawl & tubes will DIE...

I've had sites blacklisted by Youtube before. There's always the chance they could pull the plug at any moment, but do the risks outweigh the rewards? I'm doing it mainstream. Been doing it for a while too. Only issues I've ever ran into stem from stripping their player and not including the Youtube logo. Let them have their little brand on the video, do a good job o building a nice site around it all, plop some Adsense panels in there and it doesn't seem to bother anybody over ar the G. I wouldn't doubt if they blocked off adult related sites from embedding their stuff though. It's the same when it comes to video uploaders. Everybody always whining about their "sexy" videos getting the axe. I've uploaded fucktons to youtube, I don't think I've actually lost an account once, but again I've never tried to go the adult route with it...

Well, you'd think the all-powerful Google would have their ship tightened up. But apparently not.
