California studios - time 2 Move 2 Arizona - Pornvalley 2.0

Mandatory condom law (oh it's coming)?
Earthquakes?
Skyrocketing cost of living?
Smog and the worst Freeway congestion in the Nation?
State taxes?
Expensive housing costs?
CA even has a $800 annual minimum "tax" just to form a LLC.
The list of stuff that makes producing in California harder than it needs to be is long and growing.

What's holding you back from starting fresh in the second porn capital of the Nation - Phoenix, AZ?

There are lots and lots of adult companies here already. The infrastructure is great, weather works, no earthquakes, no condom laws, lenient labor laws, a great network of fellow industry professionals, housing prices at record lows, lower State taxes, and so much more.

I'd like to get something started in this regard. I believe Arizona will see a slew of smart producers and studios coming in from California. If you are in AZ, let's talk. If you are in CA, let's talk.

Step Closer to Required Condoms in Porn?
March 19, 2010 12:06 PM

A quick update to a story Lisa Ling and producer Arash Ghadishah brought to us in November about the delicate issue of mandating condoms in the pornography industry.

The worker safety board in California voted unanimously yesterday to further study a condom requirement proposal written by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

Under the current law, porn stars must test negative for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases within 30 days of filming.

Most pornography insiders, many of whom we talked to, say the testing policy is safety precaution enough -- adding that more viewers would turn away if condoms were a requirement at a time when the industry is already losing business to free Web content.

We also talk to former porn star Darren James, whose positive HIV test in 2004 shut down the industry for a month. He now advocates for a condom requirement.

Just curious as to why you would pick AZ over NV when NV has no personal or corporate income tax.

Kroy 03-19-2010 08:57 PM

Mandating condoms in movies will be disastrous. Consumers do not want to watch that. Those producers living in areas that do not require condoms will at least have a fighting chance in today's climate. Why make it tougher on yourself?
Even if the condom law doesn't pass, what's next? California's government seems to be up in everybody's business all the time (adult and non-adult, health related, labor related etc. etc.) . Personally I wouldn't want to deal with that.

Because I'm in AZ and I know who is here, and what the benefits/tradeoffs are. NV is fine but I feel strongly that Phoenix is the more conducive place. We have a lot of (mostly online) adult businesses here already.

Yeah it's hot. We also have something called air conditioning everywhere. Works well.

Cal OSHA? Cal labor laws? Taxes everytime you turn around, including bullshit fees just to establish a LLC? List goes on, you're probably just too used to it, or just don't have a business model that deals with it on a regular basis. Ask someone who has a business in Cali and one in Phoenix and ask him to compare...

AaronM 03-19-2010 10:08 PM

Too many assholes in AZ already. Now you want the rest of the porn world to move there?

AaronM 03-19-2010 10:09 PM

Oh another thing.....I know a SHIT TON of LA porn people and lets just say that they LOVE their medical options. Such options are FAR from available in AZ.

Jon Oso 03-19-2010 10:12 PM

I dunno I love Phoenix, but I really don't see an entire group of people like that simply packing up and moving shop here.

A) It's too fucking hot. I for one love the heat but even having been here for 12 years I stay inside as much as possible in the summer
B) Wasn't aware it was legal to shoot hardcore here in AZ
C) It's too fucking hot.

yes in AZ we have AC and some houses like the one I rented out for porn shoots had upstairs and downstairs AC units but sometimes the producers would forget to turn my AC units back on after they were done shooting :1orglaugh On more than one time i walked downstairs from my office and found the downstairs to be 95 to 100

I don't think AZ could ever be the next LA.. Yes AZ is HUGE when it comes to internet porn but I don't think it has the talent pool for DVD porn and with "Joe Arpaio" in AZ I can't see him letting his area turn into mainstream porn without a fight.. No I would think Vegas would be the 2nd option.

If people under the age of 55 would actually get out and vote Arpaio would no longer be in office. That dude is a huge publicity stunt ... He was even the center of a reality TV show where they would lure in people with warrants to these big elaborate pranks, fuck with them for an hour then arrest them. A guy like that is only after fame and attention. The money they spend on that could have gotten 50 people behind bars instead of the 5 or so per episode.

But yeah, Mr Rubber Gun would never let it happen.

It's not. Phoenix PD has given us the Desert Divas case and are prosecuting a webmaster of an escort site for just uploading content and managing it.

Phoenix is God's waiting room on Earth and I really dont think the older republicans in the state are going to warm up to being Porn Valley 2.0. My mom lives in Surprise and to annoy her stodgy fellow retirees she likes to tell them her son is a porn lawyer... she gets a kick out of the looks she gets.

And weed will never be legal in Arizona... that alone will not allow Arizona to become the next porn capitol.

hypedough 03-20-2010 12:08 AM

AZ will be even more strict than CA if porn production becomes prevolent. You sound the like the typical Phoenix native who thinks their city is on par with the likes of NY, LA, Boston, etc.. Come on dude, I have family there and we all know its a quiet Christian city. A church on every corner. If porn goes anywhere, it's closer to Sin City not closer to Sheriff Joe.

Most uninformed statement in this thread yet. Keep the excuses coming.

Mutt 03-20-2010 06:33 AM

i'd be shocked if the condom law passed - Porn Valley brings in some nice tax revenues to a state that is in deep shit financially. Methinks the powers that be will make sure that this gets pushed off and pushed off.

Arizona is a conservative state, most politicians and citizens have no idea how much porn is being produced in the Phoenix area. If California chased out the porn industry with the condom law I don't think Arizona would welcome it at all once they found out it was going on. I think the industry would move to Miami.

sexdatesj 03-20-2010 08:05 AM

I agree, I moved here 4 years ago :)

cherrylula 03-20-2010 08:12 AM

Phoenix hotter than say Chatsworth? it gets pretty hot in the valley too, from someone who worked there.

Amen. I was born and raised in PHX, when time for college came I was out to LA and never looked back until a few of the locations we shot in LA booked up and ended up having to shoot at a place I own in Phoenix for 3 girls....pain in the ass, neighbors and people out there are unreal.

I wouldn't mind Vegas, but I am still gonna live here in Phoenix for a while.

Porno Dan 03-20-2010 09:25 AM

If the board comes back and recommends condoms and it becomes a law it in California what do you think will happen next.

It won't be long before anyone shooting porn in the United States without condoms gets prosecuted by OSHA.

They just won't go after the big Los Angeles based companies, they will make examples out of companies shooting in states like Arizona and Florida where it is a gray area at best to shoot porn.

Semi-Retired-Dave 03-20-2010 09:29 AM

Great time to buy up there if you are willing to sit on your properties for about 10 years.
Other than that, I love LA.

Agreed... if a Cal-OSHA can regulate condoms its not hard to believe that another state's OSHA dept could regulate porn production to the point of where it is truly illegal to shoot in other states -- it could go from gray to black for Arizona, Florida and Nevada.

Condoms in California doesnt equate to more opportunities in other states - it might mean productions are actually outlawed by health and safety regulations in other states.

I can tell you that a lot of other states look to California and follow their lead when it comes to laws and regulations....

digitaldivas 03-20-2010 10:23 AM

I remember one day when suddenly everything went quiet. My wife and I looked at each other with puzzled looks on our faces. "What just happened?". The fucking AC went off and it was so strange not to have it on after nearly seven or eight months of it being on nearly non stop. Fuck that. Fuck "dry heat". Fuck not being able to go outside for six months of the year.

I live in Northern California now. It gets a bit warm in the summer, a bit cold in the winter. Never snows, rarely rains. No crime, no smog, little traffic. Very nice here.

Oh, and Phoenix is fucking ugly.

Um....

Because in most states it's illegal to wear headphones while driving but a single sided headset is allowed.

You guys bitching about heat, It gets to over 120 in the shade every year hear in redding, dry heat and it sucks. Sacramento is nice, the San Fernando Vally gets hot, but the humidity has gotten out of hand. Smog doesn't help. But it's a trade off to eat at Tommy's.

One of the good points was made by Porno Dan and confirmed by Michael/Pornlaw (if Cali does make condoms mandatory, other States might follow suit).

The heat, to a point, is also a good argument, albeit only in the summer time and then it's also only an issue if you need to spend a lot of time outdoors. But I too dislike the summer heat here so I completely understand this might just be a deal breaker for some.

Statements like "people are assholes in Phoenix" and the like aren't really helpful. Guess what, people in other States say the same thing about LA. Personally I don't think you can generalize an entire area like that, there's good folks and some not so great ones everywhere. That shouldn't keep one from making a business decision I feel.

Allow me to rephrase:

The Phoenix area seems to have more assholes involved in the porn industry than most other cities. There are a lot of two faced back stabbing pricks living there who happen to also be in the porn business.

That being said, there are a few great people from the biz there too....Just more PORN assholes per capita...

Ah sorry to hear about that, Aaron. I've not had that experience myself, although I've been called an asshole myself (although never a backstabber) so maybe I'm part of the problem? LOL.
