New Healthcare Bill Paves the Way to...
Actually it's already started with 10% taxes on tanning beds. This is absolutely ridiculous for multiple reasons. The major one being that the federal government is now taxing things that are considered "unhealthy"... Not sure where they get that authority from but... Tanning beds are often recommended to treat seasonal depression, psoriasis, and a few other skin diseases...
The main point here is... where does it fucking stop? If/Once this healthcare bill is in full effect I guarantee you will see tons of new regulation and legislation taxing all kinds of "unhealthy" things under the guise of "reducing healthcare costs". Did you know the retail cost on a pack of cigarettes is about $0.75? The rest is ALL tax. Depending on where you live you can pay up to $9 in tax per pack. I can't wait till all our "unhealthy" products and services cost orders of magnitude more... not because of cost of goods but because the government says they're unhealthy... Pay attention people, we're losing our freedoms left and right... |
I don't tan so I don't have to pay for this. I don't smoke so I don't have to pay there. I can ride my bike and not drive my car and that would eliminate my need to pay for the taxes there.
This is about choices, we all have them. You choose to either pay or not pay. |

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. THEN THEY CAME for the Catholics, and I didn?t speak up because I was a Protestant. THEN THEY CAME for me and by that time no one was left to speak up." |

Smoking gives you lung cancer. If people are dumb enough to do them then they deserve to be taxed... :upsidedow |
Whew!! Just read that Staffers and Party Leaders may be exempt from the Health Care Bill. Now that is pure genius!!! Pass a bill that you and your staff don't have to live by and have the IRS fine and collect from the citizens....good stuff... :1orglaugh

I fail to see how someone under a doctor's direction who uses a tanning bed is "stupid". People who think taxes should be just smacked on anything because the government thinks something is better for you are stupid. People who think someone that does something "bad for them" are stupid are just plain idiots... Think about all the activities that can be bad for you that lead to higher cost of healthcare... Surfing, skydiving, boating, white water rafting, skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, ALL SPORTS wear down your body... Are they all stupid? Would you also like to impose a tax on people that go to the beach? Because that's way fucking worse for you than a tanning bed... what about those ON the beach should they get additional taxes too? |
The one part of the HCR that I really do not like is the mandatory coverage part. I know there are reasons that they given why it is necessary and constitutionally allowed but I really do not like it

Why should I being penalized for enjoying my life? And that doesn't reduce any costs at all, that just moves money around and taxes people for enjoying something that isn't REALLY good for you... EDIT: Actually, it INCREASES costs because you've got to pay for a whole team of bureaucrats to manage, collect, and redistribute the funds. |
I usually don't get in to heated debates but it really bothers me when someone uses a quote from a time when a government commited genocide to argue against a government offering health care for it's citizens.
Also, I'm sure if you are using a tanning bed under a doctors direction then you won't be paying the taxes on it since it is medically prescribed it should be covered. |

Because they all contribute to healthcare costs the government can swoop in and say, "hey, we need to lower healthcare costs so we want less people doing X". Where X is whatever they want. |

"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, three-quarters of health care spending now goes to treat ?preventable chronic diseases.? Not all of these diseases are linked to diet ? there?s smoking, for instance ? but many, if not most, of them are. We?re spending $147 billion to treat obesity, $116 billion to treat diabetes, and hundreds of billions more to treat cardiovascular disease and the many types of cancer that have been linked to the so-called Western diet." Yes, exercise has its risks, but I don't think you can put it into the same boat when it comes to the costs and consequences like smoking or eating the wrong foods. If you have some facts (That's not debatable, that's a fact.) showing the high cost to health care that exercise is causing, it would be cool to share. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/10/opinion/10pollan.html |

they should be fined if they don't wear sun tan lotion on the beach :winkwink: |

What I'm saying is the government now has a blanket excuse for why they COULD tax those things if they wanted... and they do, they want to tax everything possible. That much should be evident so don't be surprised when you see some new taxes you don't agree with but the guy next to you doesn't care because it doesn't effect him... |

Life is choices. If you don't want to pay these taxes CHOOSE not to use these things. And as stated above. If a tanning bed is prescribed by your doctor then it will be covered under you health insurance as long as it is not for cosmetic use. These things are already covered today. |
next they will levy a tax against McDonalds, the Big Mac Tax HR5150

There is no bold in my original post, or the one that quoted me after, just in yours?
Also for the person that quoted this as Dennis Prager, I think it was originally from a priest in Germany during World War II |

And when someone has convinced enough people that porn is absolutely detrimental to one's health they'll mandate a porn tax. When that starts to bite into people's wallets maybe then they'll understand the nature of your post above. |

The term later began to be used in reference to homosexuality, in particular, from the early 20th century, a usage that may have dated prior to the 19th century. In modern English, gay has come to be used as an adjective, and occasionally as a noun, that refers to the people, practices, and culture associated with homosexuality. By the end of the 20th century the word gay was recommended by major style guides to describe people attracted to members of the same sex |
