Forum Software

For those of you who run forums, what software do you use?

AlCapone 05-05-2010 01:00 PM

It's a php script that uses MySQL, AJAX, CSS and JQuery, the script is called Nunya.

aztecboi2003 05-05-2010 01:07 PM

Vbulletin. Haven't upgraded yet to ver4 though.

Davy 05-05-2010 01:32 PM

Vbulletin version 3.8.X. Will probably never upgrade to v4, because it sucks.

I use Invision Power Boards for all my boards. Not free, but regularly updates to prevent attacks and great service and support

ThumbLord 05-05-2010 03:15 PM

VBulletin as well, will never upgrade to version 4, unless my partner Sam says so.

La_Sexorcist 05-05-2010 04:22 PM

phpbb.com and I have also used invision power board.

Its free and simple to set up.. The earlier critisms about it being easy to hack have been sorted..

Have a look at my board: maturereaderswives

CunningStunt 05-06-2010 03:33 AM

Vbulletin on one, Yet another forum on another, it's asp.net based. Does the job, free too.

goodsites 05-06-2010 04:52 AM

Using vbulletin 4. I like it so far but the skinners and designers dont.

They say lots of stuff not for that is not really finished so all you get is the same skin made with different colors and few changes... To me it's worth getting though.. At ease with its security although you do have to patch a lot... Not worth waking up to a hacked forum from the other freebie ones that don't have the man power to get the testing and code proper. But if you have no cash and not sure if the project will work, phpbb is the other route if you ask me. Hears lots of horror stories with smf

$180 vbull per domain = business tax write off

UFGators2007 05-06-2010 11:00 AM

I like Vbulletin best, but seems like everyone and their mothers is using it.

Amputate Your Head 05-06-2010 11:03 AM

phpBB3 :2 cents:

Cyber Fucker 05-06-2010 11:05 AM

vBulletin 3.8.x 4ever

GirlsOnYou 05-06-2010 11:39 AM

phpBB 3 too. But if I were to have a busy forum, I'd roll my own.

devine 05-06-2010 12:29 PM

it depends on the context. For standalone forums, I'd recommend phpBB, if you're using a CMS like WP or Drupal, then phpBB with a WP or Drupal bridge. For WP you could also use SimpleForum, it looks horrible but you can customize it at will, and since it uses WP engine, it's 1000 times more powerful than any existing forum script. But you'll need some customization, while phpBB has very nice skins.

Simle Machines is pretty cool, but not as powerful or feature-filled as the above

Then you have VB3 and VB4. It's great, but honestly, at this point many free scripts do what VB does, many times they do it way better/faster and you don't have to pay, so really can't see the point. Plus, you'll need to know how to customize it, because otherwise you'll need an expert designer/programmer and that expert may need to be a current VB paid user, otherwise he won't have any support from VB forum, and believe me it has many bugs

fris 05-06-2010 01:46 PM

vbulletin only

DigitalTheory 05-06-2010 01:59 PM

Thank you for the info :) I was leaning towards VBULLETIN and SMF. :) Time to compare the two lol.

CyberHustler 05-06-2010 02:11 PM

phpBB3... the 3 is very important because 2 sucked, but 3 is the absolute best forum software ever created in my opinion.
