One of the new innovations in surfing photography is the use of cameras mounted on RC helicopters which are then flown off the beach and out to where the waves are breaking.

Some have captured some incredible video but one bad move can mean a total loss of equipment so it's very risky. It would be so cool to take a rig like that down to Costa Rica and fly it around capturing video :)

justinsain 06-09-2010 05:50 PM

Couldn't find a surf video real quick but here's the general idea as to how I'd use one.
I saw a rig where they used an HD video camera mounted on a gyro that kept the camera level and it was amazing to watch.

:1orglaugh I thought you meant a real one hehe! I was going to get one once, but decided on a boat. With a real one, its not the price of the chopper, its the price of the landing & where you keep it. With a model copter, well, they are just plain fun & hoping you have lots with it dyna mo :thumbsup

goodsites 06-09-2010 06:31 PM

Oh thought this was real helicopters.. :D

justinsain 06-09-2010 06:33 PM

Here's another example of using an RC Helicopter for photography. Seems very risky
and leaving little room for error but yields rewarding results.
As a photographer the potential intrigues me as the technology advances.

I hope you find the right helicopter for you and get to have some fun with it :thumbsup

dyna mo 06-09-2010 06:35 PM

that's an impressive rig in that video!

jigg 06-09-2010 10:15 PM

bell 407 or nothing

Mr Pheer 06-09-2010 10:34 PM

Trex 500 is the best combo of size and power. More than enough power to carry a camera.

Thats really cool!:thumbsup

ottopottomouse 06-10-2010 05:26 AM

Compared to how easy an RC plane is to fly I found a helicopter impossible :(

dyna mo 06-10-2010 11:35 AM

right on!

which of those 4 do you recommend?

Itchy 06-10-2010 11:41 AM

Top 2 are beginner ones the one on the left is slow and doesn't go fast the right one is a pretty zippy one that can fly outside not bad but very low wind both good for indoor playing both 4 channel

the bottom left I flew once and blew up the blades in a crash fixed it and put it back in box lol the right one is still brand new but both are out door 6 channel ones

dyna mo 06-10-2010 11:45 AM

cool, thx!

L-Pink 06-10-2010 11:54 AM

How many ounces of blow can that carry?

.

Bex 06-10-2010 11:56 AM

This thread reminds me that I need to get a new remote for my boat! Have not had it out once this year :(

milambur 06-10-2010 12:20 PM

How far can one of those go on a charge?
Has anyone tried hooking them up to the mobile networks and flying them with video feed only?

<--- fuckin jealous here

I have a Cypher-3D and a Trex 500.

rowan 06-11-2010 02:01 PM

Not quite in the same league, but I've seen some cool still camera shots off a kite. I guess video wouldn't work since you can't precisely control a kite.

I have one of those... made the mistake of drunkenly trying to land and take off on the fiance's head. The landing went surprisingly smooth... taking off caused a hair catastrophe... The heli no longer gets used indoors.

Dieing to get a bigger cam model. I doubt Beth will be coming with me on the first few runs to use it.

TrainWreckContent 06-11-2010 02:18 PM

those vids are pretty cool
