Here we go -- FIFA world cup 2010 begins, will you be watching?

Maybe learn something about the host country? CBC always throws in a lot of special spots about the host country.

Some may not realize just how big a sporting event this is. Just as a comparison, the superbowl gets roughly 100-110 million viewers for that one game, give or take. The world cup however will see well over 700 million viewers worldwide, nearly equal to 1/8th of the world's population. We may love our football, hockey, baseball, hoops, golf and NASCAR over here in N. America but definitely on a global scale THIS is the premier sport on planet Earth. No other single sport or sporting event comes close to rivaling the Olympics for viewership and popularity like this one does.

S Africa vs Mexico starting now. Like I said in the title, HERE WE GO. Already you can barely hear the announcer over all the hornblowing from over 70k crazed fans. Sounds like the buzz of a giant horde of killer bees blasting through my tv speakers, lol.

Whether you're a fan or not I say don't miss this party.

Will watch most games.

CDSmith 06-12-2010 05:33 AM

That 2nd game yesterday was pretty boring compared to the first. France and Ureguay battle to a classic 0-0 tie, ooh. It's games like this that are why a lot of people say soccer is boring.

Greece doesn't look much better today either, 1-0 for S. Korea at the half.

Looking forward to seeing what Argentina can do in their match later today. I underdstand they barely made qualification for the world cup, which surprises me. I thought they'd be more of a powerhouse like they usually are.

Then USA v England. It's going to be a mad day of staring at the telly for me.

CDSmith 06-12-2010 06:20 AM

Okay the Greeks just looked baaad in this game. Korean Republic are, kind of surprisingly I might add, the first team to register a win at the 2010 world cup so far. lol

2-0 for S Korea.

CDSmith 06-12-2010 08:59 AM

Argentina 1-0 over Nigeria

Messi couldn't buy a goal. Like 15 incredible chances and nothing to show for it.

Yes, he is. No worries, Nigeria had a lot of great chances and near misses too but also couldn't buy a goal. :D

So many of these greats can't seem to hit the net or control their shot enough to keep the ball down, instead sending it rocketing 20 feet over the crossbar. You'd think a guy like Messi would be the exception, but not today.

I don't know if Argentina has the chops to take it all the way to the finals but out of the 8 teams that have played thus far I'd say they show the most promise. Good defense, very strong attack.

TheDoc 06-12-2010 09:09 AM

Nope... but good luck to whomever your teams are.

Scott McD 06-12-2010 09:14 AM

To be fair the Nigeria keeper had a great game, or it could have been 3 or 4 - 0 Argentina...

Yes, thanks for adding that. Very good point, the guy was stellar.

Chile debuts on the 16th vs Honduras.... I am totally ready with my red t-shirt on :)

I thought Uruguay was going to win yesterday... :( This world cup started really interesting, but I hate the constant sound of the horns looks like they are playing on a honeycomb...

I'm getting used to it now, but whenever I do think about it yes, it's very annoying. I hope bloggers the world over will tell it like it is and slam the hell out of the powers that be for allowing this insane constant mindless buzzing at every game.

Today's match with Ghana and Serbia was pretty good. Well, not if you're Serbian though. 0-0 throughout the game. Then with about 6 minutes to go in regulation a Serb player touches the ball with his hand in the goal area and a penalty kick is awarded.
Result: 1-0 for Ghana.

After trying to watch a few hours of gameplay and seeing about 3 goals, I've decided this is a dumb sport. I always wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt, but its retarded. A bunch of dudes running up and down a 2 mile long field, hopelessly flailing a ball around a field for the chance that it might bump off someone's body part and magically land in a giant net. I love it when the goalie kicks the ball all the way down the field, praying a teammate gets it. Hopefully all the fans will start brawling in the stadium and eat each other alive in a giant bloodbath all caught on camera -- right before the napalm airstrike.

lol :thumbsup

Germany currently serving up a big bucket of whoopass to the Aussies, 4-0 in the 2nd half now. Will be nice to see how they do against a tougher team.

Beautiful goal by Paraguay making it 1-0 at the half.

Italy gotta step it up.

I would like to watch but haven't got to it yet.

stever 06-14-2010 03:24 PM

woke up at 7am today to watch holland and denmark
good game although holland caught a break
they did not really impress me with their offense

CDSmith 06-15-2010 09:23 AM

Well the first two games today were sleepers. One nice shot by Ronaldinio from Portugal in their game, a rocket off the goal post from 30 yards out. That would have been one fine fine goal but, oh well.

Looking forward to this afternoon's game. By all rights Brazil SHOULD pound the N Korean net with a barrage of goals. But you never know.
