America = Cancer Country

15,000 Americans will die of cancer from CT scans given in a single year, predict scientists at the National Cancer Institute. Americans get the most medical radiation in the world, even more than folks in other rich countries. The U.S. accounts for half of the most advanced procedures that use radiation, and the average American's dose has grown sixfold over the last couple of decades.

Just part of the reason why I don't trust doctors or hospitals.
When I go to the hospital, it's because I have a severed limb. Otherwise they can keep their psuedo-medical advice and backroom deals with pharma companies. I want no part of it.

ProG 06-15-2010 12:28 PM

I've read that the radiation exposure from one CT scan is equivalent to over 200 chest x-rays. I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Edit: From Wikipedia

Quote:

Thus, cardiac CTA is equivalent to approximately 100-600 chest X-rays or over 3 years worth of natural background radiation.

One study indicated that radiation by CT scans is often higher and more variable than cited and each of the 19,500 CT scans that are daily performed in the US is equivalent to 30 to 442 chest x-rays in radiation.

You're flirting with "fatfooness", ProG...

Don't go to the doctor unless absolutely necessary.
Doctors bury their mistakes.

There are tons of diagnosis where CT is necessary. OK, you have option to avoid CT. But don't expect doctors to know what's with you and how to cure you.

amerikkka is a cancer

AdPatron 06-15-2010 02:54 PM

They have scans now that don't use radiation.

BlackCrayon 06-15-2010 05:53 PM

what about ultrasounds?

Paul Markham 06-16-2010 01:45 AM

When anyone charges for a procedure expect them to use it often.

epitome 06-16-2010 01:55 AM

As someone that has had at least 50 CT scans (guessing by multiplying average a year times years sick) and three just this year alone, this scares me terribly.

Couldn't have been more accurate. When you pay for health be sure that a lot of unnecessary stuff will be loaded on you to fatten up the bill. Thats if you have insurance, if you don't you stay home and die.

Why would you need that many CT scans?

So I either die of something the doctor can't identify or cure, or die later of the cancer from the CT scan?? Sounds like either way I am fucked :Oh crap

Then I'm in good company with the source, or the National Cancer Institute -- "the US government's principal agency for cancer research."
