Basically, have a gay site, looking to improve its serp, would buying hardlinks on straight sites do any good?

Why not buy on gay sites? Anyway, yes they will get weighted in but relevant links are always best.

Links on 'big dicks' straight sites might provide good value... links on 'up close pussy' sites likely would not. Engines don't know if a site is 'gay or straight' but the do know the text and links associated with each site. Focus on relevance not sexual orientation. A link from a blog about 'Glenn Beck being a big cocksucker who deserves to be ass fucked bareback and filmed while felching a load out of his cellmate' could be excellent for a gay site even if the blog was primarilly political and not sexual.

when you look at the top results on google there's some of the biggest bulk link buyers around at the top.

yes does not matter the only get links from similar niches is mostly hype.

start grabbing some pr5 links from straight porn sites and see what happens.

when i did backlink analysis of top ranking gay porn sites - for some of them - all their links were straight.

depends on the sites and the setup. All backlinks can give link juice, some more then others
