Who wants to go parachuting?

There's a parachute school/club here in Gimli and I want to try a jump sometime in July

it's $300.

6 hour course and they let you jump by yourself the first time. $60 a jump after that

My brother is coming with me - we've both always wanted to try this.

Anyone else want to come to Gimli for a visit in July and go parachuting?

SleazyDream 06-29-2010 11:37 AM

anyone?

I would do that indoor flying / skydiving thing if I ever get back to Vegas... but I have to pass on the plane leaping for now.

L-Pink 06-29-2010 11:38 AM

I honestly think I would be dead of a heart attack before my chute even opened.

I'd love to go jumping with ya man!

alias 06-29-2010 11:52 AM

Sounds good but I dunno, Kinda scared shitless. Solo jumping is way cooler than tandem though.

pradaboy 06-29-2010 12:26 PM

I'd shit my fucking pants

Jarmusch 06-29-2010 12:29 PM

Isn't there a weight limit?

xNetworx 06-29-2010 12:50 PM

You couldn't pay ME $300 to jump from a plane.

If I want an adrenaline rush for $300 I'll go clubbing and get my fuck on with a hot random girl :1orglaugh

douchebag4life jk

Been there and done that...but instead of paying to do it...I was paid for doing it. None the less...AIRBORNE!

TeenCat 06-29-2010 12:59 PM

please take some pics of you naked in the air and post them here, maybe i will go next time also :)

Pipecrew 06-29-2010 01:02 PM

i have never heard of a place that will allow you to jump alone your first time, some places make you jump like 10 tandum times first. Probably to make sure you dont panic.

I don't think they pull your ripcord...I think you are talking about a static line jump and not a free fall jump.

Loch 06-29-2010 01:07 PM

I have a few people i would like to get on that plane with an empty pack right now!

WarChild 06-29-2010 01:30 PM

What you're doing is called a first jump. There's no free fall involved and you miss most of the experience. If you're just going to do one jump and not continue the experience, you should really do a Tandum jump. There is weight restrictions on that though.

Semi-Retired-Dave 06-29-2010 01:31 PM

I would, but I don't trust those Planes. They always crash before you get high enough to jump out of them.

I thought the whole point of parachuting was the falling?

SGS 06-29-2010 02:52 PM

Woman with two kids just up the road from here had a parachute fail a couple of weeks back.

wow - you'd think a first jump would be called something different than a first jump LOL

I'm too heavy and tall for a tandom

You do not have a sense of falling...unless you have a reference...such as watching the aircraft you just exited from or jumping along side a mountain...etc. ect. Looking at the ground does not give you a sense of falling...it simply looks as if the ground is getting closer...coming up to meet you.

TurboAngel 06-29-2010 02:58 PM

I would like to watch!

that would be cool

I hate spinning rides but I LOVE acceleration stuff

No. If it is not a free fall you do not have air rushing past you anyhow. The most surprising thing one will experience on a static line jump is the amazing silence once your parachute opens.

Well to be fair, most people do a tandem jump before a "first jump". :winkwink:

The first jump is pretty fun but it's nothing like free falling. Where I did my first jump(s), we would hang from the wing struts and the instructor is actually sitting in the struts with your pilot chute in his hand. You let go, he drops the chute behind you.

After completing a successful first jump you can do the AFF Accelerated Free Fall (sometimes called Progressive Free Fall) jumps. They take you up to about 10,000 feet and you jump from the plane with two instructors literally holding on to you. They help to position you during free fall and hold you in the proper arch and all of that good stuff. After a fairly brief freefall one of the instructors deploys the chute and they let go of you. You pass a series of I think 10-12 jumps and then you're certified. The jumps start fairly expensive as you need two instructors, but after about half of them you're down to a single instructor. The jumps get higher and the free falls longer. By the end of your series of jumps the instructor is basically just hanging out with you in the air to make sure everything goes good.

Anyway, skydiving is the best feeling their is. Nothing else beats it.

Static line jumps are for jar head army assholes like yourself. Well more so for real fighters, I don't imagine there's much call for parachutes driving convoy trucks eh pathfinder?

Juicy D. Links 06-29-2010 03:13 PM

I would need to be heavily medicated to jump out of a plane loll

I was Airborne Infantry for 12 years...ass hole...and I have over a hundred static line jumps and have made multiple HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) jumps...in other words free falls.

BTW...Marines are reffered to as "jar heads" not Army soldiers...no need to thank me for educating you.

Nope ... it's to avoid the splatting.

"Yep, I was Airborne for just about as long as anybody .... which about three minutes and then you are just unsupplied infantry stuck behind enemy fucking lines. - Brigade Sergeant Major, 2nd Brigade 101st Airborne (my pops).

Just got a buddy of mine a 18k feet jump gift certificate at skydivesantabarbara.com for his birthday. I should be headed down there in the next month or so to jump for my first time! I can't wait!!

Spunky 06-29-2010 07:19 PM

I'd be too damned scared to try that

Imortyl Pussycat 06-29-2010 07:31 PM

omg, i totally know why you are doing this. don't even pretend it's any other reason, lol.

Inform us when the day arrives.

_Richard_ 06-30-2010 11:08 AM

yes but not in Gimli lol

CDSmith 06-30-2010 11:38 AM

I went parasailing in Mexico a few times, was up for 5 mins at about 200-300 feet, that's about as high as I want to go with a parachute. :D And with parasailing you get the going up effect as well as the coming down.

Actually I've considered doing a jump but I think I'd prefer the tandem jump the first time, for the free-fall action, but like you I'm too big and tall for it.
