Consequences of Bad Sitting Posture

1. Tension Headaches--Sitting hunched over at your job, most commonly caused by your hands reaching for the keyboard when typing on your computer leads to your shoulders and head slumping forward. This posture tightens the muscles in your neck, upper back and shoulders. After awhile, the tightness causes nerve irritations and muscle spasms which restrict proper flow of blood to the back of your head. This leads to tension headaches.

2. Diminished Breathing--Poor posture can lead to severe kyphosis (hunched back) causing the torso collapse leading to breathing difficulties. Rounded shoulders and overly bent or imbalanced spine restrict the expansion of the rib cage, which restricts the rise and fall of the breathing diaphragm. Reduced rib and spinal mobility will affect the normal breathing movement. If the diaphragm can't rise, it won't be able to draw in as much oxygen during inhalation.

3. Fatigue--Fatigue is one of the most common causes of bad posture. Tired and tight muscles cannot support the skeleton as they are designed to do. Your muscles have to work extra hard just to hold you up if you have poor posture, leaving you without energy. Lack of adequate muscle flexibility and strength, abnormal joint motion in the spine and other body regions will lead to overall muscle fatigue.

4. Make you look older--Never underestimate the beauty and health benefits, of good posture. Often poor posture is just a bad habit that is easily corrected. Poor posture not only makes you look older, but could be the first step toward dowager's hump, double chin, potbelly, and swayback as well as some internal problems too. When a person is hunched over or not standing straight that person may be perceived as older than they actually are. Good posture is not only beneficial to your body; it also makes you look taller and slimmer. What's more, good posture can convey self-confidence, which may just be the best accessory you can have.

5. Back pain-- Most common consequence of poor posture, due to muscle strain, especially lower back pain. The back muscles, ligaments & discs are under extra stress when the spine is not in proper alignment. Strong muscles help keep the spine in proper alignment and prevent back pain. Strong muscles also prevent the spine from extending beyond its normal range of motion, which is essential to protecting the ligaments and disks from injury. Visit www.DamonSoraya.com for exercises that strengthen and stretch the muscles that support the spine and help maintain proper posture.

so straighten yourself up!

I wrote an article about proper posture when sitting in a chair. The amount of comments on it claiming that slouching was actually better kind of boggled my mind. I even tried slouching all day... for science! My back hurt the next day. If I'm writing and I notice that I am slouching, I put my back against the chair and slide it forward until I can type without compromising my posture. This usually happens 500 times a day because my chair always rolls back :1orglaugh

If you slouch, consciously make yourself sit properly for a day, especially if you're on a computer, it makes a huge difference... For me at least. If you are using a shitty chair, buy a good one. I used to use a chair that I swiped from my kitchen. Worst idea ever. A huge pile of money later, I have a chair that's as pleasurable to sit in as a blowjob is to receive.

Blowjob chair.

I do not site more then 20-30 minutes at a time and then get up, walk around and stretch. I also sit on a excersise ball for couple of 20-30 min sit downs.

Having 2 hernias in lower back from accident I have no choice or I'd be cripple for life.

I set up an alarm which goes off after 45 minutes and when it goes off I drop whatever I'm doing on the computer and do something else for 15 minutes. I also walk AT LEAST one hour every single day.

Buy a good chair... I spent $1,400 on mine... and I already have good posture... When you spend 10+ hours a day in one chair it's worth it to fork over the cash...

I mean, you can't drive a chair but you DO spend a lot more time in your chair than you do your car, most likely...

ouch! what's the difference between a $1400 and a $300 chair? (other than $1100)

Chiropractors are con artists.

This is why I work at a bench, with a tall stool -- so I can stand and sit equal amounts during the day. After I built this setup, I can never go back.

Lay on the floor at least 30 minutes a day. On your back, and just relax. I'm working on being able to sleep on the floor again.

Nice post, we often forget about proper posture when we are sitting in front of the pc.
