Sponsors Seem To be Forgetting Something These Days...
I'm constantly trying out and evaluating new sponsors these days, but something I'm finding, and this might be a part of the reason for declining revenues...
landing/sales pages have gotten lazy.
Sponsors are falling all over themselves to provide RSS feeds, hosted galleries, content, FLV content, etc. etc. and are providing these new tools for affiliates, but they seem to be skimping on the most important part of the equation: landing/sales pages.
They are full of grammar errors, slopping spelling, sales messages that are generic and bland.
Is anyone watching the ebook/biz opp guys these days? Look at those landing pages.....they are well thought out, well written and actually SELL the product. They are full of hype and smoke and mirrors and fancy talk, but most importantly, they add little things that keep you there and pay $20-50 for an ebook or piece of software that you might not have even really thought about buying before.
Part of this "adapt or die" mantra is being forgotten...adapt doesn't mean you have to have all of your content on tubes and pray for some dating upsells. It means improving your sales message. Just adding a short video clip and an order form with a couple sales words isn't going to cut it.
If you are selling penis pills, a picture of a kindly old doctor, a couple testimonials and an order form aren't going to make the cut. The ratios will drop and sales are being left on the table for those who actually sell the product itself and not just the "try it free" aspect.
Adult used to be full on innovators and leaders in new media and new ideas, but have fallen behind. They've shipped all of the design/coding/text jobs overseas to the lowest bidder and are shocked that sales are down. Sure tubes and such aren't helping, but just throwing shit against a wall and hoping some will stick doesn't make it these days.
Look at the companies that have been dropping like flies. Have any of them honestly done much innovating? Have the tried anything new? Most were bored and left because they were out of ideas, didn't give a shit or just relied on cross sales and 10 console exit chains.
Social networks are doing well and people are using them every day, but has anyone in adult really embraced the idea of community sites and actually giving some..gasp...value to their sites? A couple webcams and a social network script isn't going to work there either.
I talked about this years ago, how porn was going to become a loss leader and it was met with skepticism and in some cases, a head in the sand approach. Not that I was this great prophet. There were other voices regarding this change too.
Hmm, maybe I should turn this into an article? ;-)
If any alternative sponsors (non-porn membership) want to work with me on setting up some custom/semi-custom landing pages, let's talk. Ebooks, software downloads (non-toolbar, spyware), social networking/communities, pills, etc. I'm not asking for the world here and demanding everything under the sun, but if a couple sponsors want to work with me, I'll show them what we can do together. Hell, I'm even offering to do a lot of the work here. I also don't expect these pages to be turned around in a couple hours. It's fine if it takes a little time to get your designers on them to make them work right. I want QUALITY landing pages/sales pages, and don't want something that is turned out by your philippino design team in 2 hours. I might even take a few select porn membership site sponsors, but that will be on a rare, case by case basis.
That said, if I don't feel my traffic will do well with a product, I won't waste my time or yours.
