This should be interesting, How many of you...

had a Paper Route job as a kid?

I had one, my brother had one. I had a sidecar on my bike, so we would team up, I would ride the bike and my brother would toss the paper. I used to come home from school and then do my route. But now that I think of it, don't most people like their daily news in the Morning. :Oh crap

It was fun, I think I used to make around 25 bucks a month, also mowed a couple lawns for about 5 bucks a pop, washed a few cars a month, 3 bucks a pop.

Making about 40 Bucks a month would be a good month. :thumbsup

The good ol days. :)

pornguy 07-15-2010 11:45 AM

I had another sort of route but not till I was older.. we did the paper boxes and made about 400 a week.

Barefootsies 07-15-2010 11:55 AM

Yes, had one. I believe I was 15. Did not care for it.

fatfoo 07-15-2010 11:56 AM

It was probably the GFY user with the nickname paperboy.

ottopottomouse 07-15-2010 11:57 AM

Not a daily paper round but I did do a monthly newsletter delivery - generous tips too :)

troncarver 07-15-2010 11:58 AM

i had one, loved it, very nostalgic memories i have about it...thing is i was never able to make money - it was in a decent neighborhood - maybe i spent too many of my tips on bubble gum and 11 yo whores

Jman 07-15-2010 12:01 PM

I made way more cleaning driveways in winter and cutting grass/yard work in summer then any of my friends with a paper route. And to top it I did not have to wake up at 5:30 - 6:00

fuzebox 07-15-2010 12:12 PM

My parents wouldn't "let" me get small jobs as a kid, because I was supposed to be spending every waking moment doing chores or homework. My first income was from designing websites at 15.

Are you thinking about how far you have come ? :)

Well, since I let the Paper Route go only a few months ago, I kind of miss it. :1orglaugh

FetishWeb 07-15-2010 01:02 PM

My friend on my street did. He just threw the papers in the garbage at the park and went around "collecting" and put the cash in his pocket. Took a whole month before he got fired.

Now that I think about it, he should probably be the one working in adult.

punker barbie 07-15-2010 01:02 PM

only type of job i had as a kid was in the mall but those were teenage years. to come to think of it those were the days. man life was easy then. the older i get the high standards i have in everything including on myself.

dyna mo 07-15-2010 01:04 PM

hah, i've got a pretty good scar from a bike spill while delivering papers. my big childhood biz was a pool cleaning business. started with the pools on my block and worked my way out several blocks.

TrainWreckContent 07-15-2010 01:05 PM

i never had a paper route but i delivered phone books one summer...that was brutal work and only got paid like .10 a book i delivered or something crazy like that i dont remember it was quite a while ago

Scott McD 07-15-2010 01:06 PM

Yup, sure did.

Think i made roughly £25 per week. Hated it in the winter though lol...

JFK 07-15-2010 01:08 PM

I had a paper route, Delivered the Globe and Mail, had to get up at 5am in the morning all yr around, it was pretty brutal in the winter, specially after a subscrition drive:1orglaugh
Made good money though:thumbsup

baddog 07-15-2010 01:12 PM

Torrance Press Herald - made carrier of the month my first month there for more than doubling my subscriptions.

I had a big route and a small route, 7 days a week, I would make sure every paper was on their porch, I carried so many papers I couldn't reach the handle bars for half the route, got really good at riding that way

I spent a summer putting down new coating on driveways, made a lot of money for a 15 year old

Tom_PM 07-15-2010 01:19 PM

I didnt need to have one to get the experience, because 2 of my older brothers had them. Everytime they were sick or something, I had to go deliver while mom drove and prodded me back awake. Drafted.

dyna mo 07-15-2010 01:21 PM

hardest summer jobs i've ever had:

roofing.

cleaning horse stalls. my parents would pick my up from work in the pickup truck and make me ride in the back1 lolz. true.

justinsain 07-15-2010 01:23 PM

I had one and delivered on my bike. I didn't mind it and actually had fun throwing the paper on the door step. Some throws required an arc to the right or left to get around obstacles and I liked the challenge. Sometimes you can use the door as a backboard and sometimes you can slide one in on a large front porch. The goal was to get it right under the door and if the throw was off I'd set it there manually.

What sucked was the Newspaper made me collect the money from the customers and if the customer didn't pay I didn't get paid.

Rough way for a thirteen year old to make some spending money in Miami in the late 60s :)

MaDalton 07-15-2010 01:34 PM

for sure, started at 13. but magazines, not newspapers. and i had to collect the money from the subscribers which made it sometimes a bit tireing when they were not at home and i had to come back the next day.

but i also had a bunch of soft erotic magazines to deliver and of course i had to "study" them first before my clients got them :)

I forgot about the collection part, so true.

Gerco 07-15-2010 01:53 PM

I had one for years, had about 150 fifty papers I delivered. This was in Northern North Dakota so the winter deliveries where a real bitch.

I did the horse stall cleaning for a stable in southern California, you're right, hard work

BFT3K 07-15-2010 03:08 PM

Yeah, I did all the normal kid-worker stuff... paper route, shoveled houses after snow storms, mowed lawns, raked leaves, had a lemonade stand, caddied... you name it!

Nothing like today's digital couch potatoes. Likely why obesity and diabetes are so high among kids now. This is Michelle Obama's main mission - to help kids get moving and eating right again.

Beginning at age 14 I did farm work during the summer and what ever yard work and car washing was available the remainder of the year...until I was 16. At the age of 16 I went to work at a gas station and worked there part time...after school hours and weekends...until I graduated High School.

DateDoc 07-15-2010 03:28 PM

I did not have a job until I was out of college unless you count doing odd bits for dad at his firm.

Tjeezers 07-15-2010 04:41 PM

What was the interesting part of this thread again?

Nikki_Licks 07-15-2010 04:50 PM

Yep, I had a paper route.

When I took the route over from a buddy that took ill, he had 30 customers, I built it up to around a 100 customers.....Sunday's route totally kicked my ass because the Sunday edition was always bigger, harder to toss and I would have to make a few trips back to my drop point to reload...:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

I delivered Old Town Scottsdale before all the changes ;)

Dvae 07-15-2010 04:59 PM

Does a rural paper route count?
As an adult, I helped a cousin of mine a few yrs back. Started at 10-11PM and went til dawn covered maybe 20 sq miles. I would consider it one of the worst jobs ever. I was not dependent on it for my living expenses, just something to do as he needed dependable transportation so I helped out for a few weeks.

Just now? wow so humble of you at least Gary still delivers

Vendzilla 07-15-2010 05:44 PM

I did have a great summer when I was 16, I spent the entire summer in my garage running a lathe making Harley Davidson Valve Guides for knuckle heads, My step dad was a machinist, I made some serious bank that summer. I paid for the new motor in my first car, 1967 Baracuda fast back

epitome 07-15-2010 05:49 PM

I never got the whole paper route thing because where I grew up it was always 35 year old people delivering papers in their cars at 4:30 AM. There was no such thing as a paper boy on a bike ... I always figured that was a Hollywood myth.

Come to think of it, everybody cut their own grass, too.

There were no real job opportunities until you turned 14, got your work permit and became a bus boy. No other type of job usually opened up to you until you were 16 when the work permit became less restrictive.

Adam_M 07-15-2010 07:00 PM

Had a few, got younger cheap labor to do them for me. LOL

Horny Dude 07-15-2010 07:04 PM

Hell yeah I had a paper route. Used to deliver the San Diego Union Tribune in the afternoon. Had 70 customers. Can't remember how much I made, but it wasn't much. I actually had to buy the papers from the Tribune every month, any money after that was mine.

Now a days they have adults delivering the papers, no more kids.

american pervert 07-15-2010 07:18 PM

I had one and it sucked in the winter in connecticut. it was a morning paper so I had to get up way to early. I used a shopping cart for the sunday paper.

Spunky 07-15-2010 07:21 PM

I still have one .bling aint cheap

WebairGerard 07-15-2010 08:14 PM

had a great route delivering the NY Daily News. Every morning before school. 7 days a week. hooked up a couple of milk carton baskets on the bike and hit the road. My route was pretty big and had to do 2 trips but I made great money for the time. Bought my first electric guitar and amp. :)
