YouTube banned in Turkey

"It is illegal to criticise either Ataturk or Turkishness in Turkey"

Quote:

A court in Istanbul has issued an order denying access to the video-sharing website YouTube. The state owned Turk Telecom implemented the ban today after an escalating dispute between Greek and Turkish users of the site.

The court order was issued yesterday and most internet users logging onto the site in Turkey are met with a holding page with a Turkish message, which translates as: ?Access to this site has been denied by court order ! ...?.

Greek and Turkish YouTube users have been trading video insults over the past few months, attracting much coverage in the Turkish press. Greek videos reportedly accused the founding president of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, of homosexuality; a Turkish user responded by calling Greece the birthplace of homosexuality.

It is illegal to criticise either Ataturk or Turkishness in Turkey and the prosecutor?s office in Istanbul acted despite YouTube?s agreement to take down the offending videos.

Turkey wishes to join the EU in the next round of enlargement and has been criticised for its failure to safeguard freedom of expression. The country?s most famous author, Orhan Pamuk, faced up to three years in jail after being charged with ?insulting Turkishness? after talking to a Swiss newspaper about Turkey?s human rights record. The case was dropped in January after international condemnation.

Nurten Altinok, the press prosecutor at the Istanbul Republican Chief Prosecutor?s Office, asked the Istanbul police to provide evidence of the criticisms of Ataturk on YouTube. After studying a CD of the videos she asked a magistrate to review the case, a court order was issued by an Istanbul criminal court yesterday.

A spokesman from the Turkish Embassy in London said: ?The videos included parts which insulted Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, our founding father. There is no explanation from the Turkish government, it was a court verdict. English profanities were placed on top of the Turkish flag and pictures of Ataturk.?

Videos posted on the user-generated site included a Greek marching song, which celebrated the bloody history between the two nations and labelled Turkey ?Little Asia?.

Paul Doany, the head of Turk Telecom, the country?s largest internet provider explained: ?We are not in the position of saying that what YouTube did was an insult, that it was right or wrong.?

He told the state-run Anatolia news agency: ?A court decision was proposed to us, and we are doing what that court decision says.?

Some of the smaller private internet providers have not yet implemented the ban.

So, just few things to clear up the issue.

Yeah, Youtube is banned at Turkey, and the first reason was insulting videos about Ataturk, and after that it turned that our government wants Google to open an office at Turkey, something like local Google HQ, so they can fu.k up their brains if they do something that over government doesn't really like. After that insulting video situation, they announced that Youtube denied to remove those insulting videos and that's why it's banned. But then it turned out that because of Adwords program, Google is earning quite a lot of money from advertisers but in return they don't pay it's tax to government.

So nowadays government saying Google that, if they pay the required taxes and i dont remember the amount, but it's quite high amount i believe, and open a Google HQ at Turkey, they will remove the ban of Youtube.

Anyways, there is something like 3 or 4 thousand sites blocked and main reason is porn, most of those illegal tube sites, including some legal sites among Youtube. Yeah i know it's really shitty situation and there is some protests going on about it here, and no one is happy about it.

But, Youtube is 3rd most viewed site in Turkey, so just think how effective is the ban. Most of the people already knows the solution how to bypass blocked sites and reach them. Most popular ways are changing DNS, and editing host files of windows to write ip's of the sites that are blocked.

And recently, there was another shitty situation that some other Google services are blocked because Youtube changed their ip, and our government decided to block access by banning youtube ips, but it caused other google services to get banned because they use the same ip. And when people complained about this, the answer was " it is google's fault that they are using same ips for all of their services".

So it's really fucked up situation.

Yeah, Ataturk is like God for them, it's something religious, they have him everywhere.

TeenCat 07-26-2010 10:55 AM

religion is the best

kowalsky 07-26-2010 10:58 AM

To make fun from Ataturk is like make fun of the king in Thailand. You will pay it very expensive...

bonjurkes 07-26-2010 11:09 AM

i think there must be a rule at gfy about respecting to each other.

No, Ataturk is not a god, he is the creator of Turkey and most of the things we use / respect / know today. That's it.

But for some people it's more than that for sure..

Klen 07-26-2010 11:20 AM

It must be nice to live in a country whose government protects it's people and the integrity of it's religion so diligently from such evils as youtube.

When will the rest of the world become as enlightened as Turkey?

chronig 07-26-2010 12:23 PM

Their country isn't called Turkey for nothing. :thumbsup

HomerSimpson 07-26-2010 06:28 PM
