Matthew Simmons, who rattled the energy industry by arguing the world was rapidly approaching peak oil production capacity, died at his home in North Haven, Maine, the energy research group he founded said on Monday.

He died suddenly on Sunday, his Ocean Energy Institute said in a statement.

Simmons, 67, a former adviser to U.S. President George W. Bush, had a heart attack while in a hot tub, local media reported, citing a report by the Knox County Sheriff's Office.

In his 2005 book "Twilight in the Desert," Simmons argued Saudi Arabia's oil reserves were nearing the highest levels of production they were capable of achieving, after which point the world's yearly oil supply would begin to decline.

While Simmons' views on peak oil were regarded as somewhat controversial, he drew even more attention for a June 9 interview with Fortune magazine, in which he predicted BP Plc would be driven bankrupt in "about a month" as the cleanup costs for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill mounted.

I mean........ a heart attack in a hot tub? That is not very subtle. :helpme

Inconceivable!!!

We would have a lot of dead bodies laying around if they killed everyone over the last 50 years that said the oil would dry up.

That's sad news. He was a pretty smart guy.

We should know in the next few years, by mid decade at the latest, wether or not the thesis that he was most famous for, that the saudi oil field reserves have been grossly and criminally overstated, turn out to be true.

Bad news for the US if his arguments have merit. Even if they don't have merit we are still fucked, we passed the turnaround point years ago, and the evidence of this last collapse is that switching to an alternative to oil is pretty much impossible under market stress.

it's not hard to take him out considering all the money and interests involved
so why should it be unlikely someone helped him have a heart attack?

I have no idea what the point would be. I just thought it was odd. I had been waiting for a statement from him regarding his theories about the gulf oil spill given that recent events seemed to have proved him wrong........ but it never came......... next thing I hear he is dead. If there was foul play I would assume it had something to do with his recent statements on BP and the spill rather than his book on peak oil.

A heart attack in the hot tub is very unfortunate.
Rest in peace, Matthew Simmons.
