Government continues to shrink

Pentagon belt-tightening will cut thousands of jobs - Aug 2010
Gates to shut major command in Va. that employs 5,000 people

WASHINGTON ? Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday that tough economic times require that he shutter a major command that employs some 5,000 people around Norfolk, Va., and begin to eliminate other jobs throughout the military.

The announcement was the first major step by Gates to find $100 billion in savings in the next five years. Gates says that money is needed elsewhere within the Defense Department to repair a force ravaged by years of war and to prepare troops for the next fight.

:2 cents: Nice continued steady reduction of government. No more need to wish for that I guess. Seems like with the mass job cuts they did last month, and the ongoing reduction, we'll be down to a conference room and a box of Krispy Kremes in no time.

Maybe someone over there finally realized we're $52,972,540,113,678,201,338,224.03 in debt.

well, that's just great, cutting jobs instead of canceling a couple cruise missiles getting built.

Minte 08-09-2010 07:32 PM

Maybe they could start by shrinking some of the 700ish US military bases that are in 130 countries around the world.

Think of the government like a pile of shrunken heads. The more heads are shrunken, the larger the pile gets... shrinking and growing at the same time.

If we adopt a policy of crushing the skulls like Skynet does, would just be a fine layer of powder instead of a pile.

You think the phrase "more heads are shrunken" is grammatically correct?

Government and its evil and isidious control over our lives has shrunken not a bit. Some jobs have gone away which may slow down the monster but that is about it.

Attmepts at more government control will continue and civil rights will continue to be eroded despite the job cuts.

Robbie 08-09-2010 09:00 PM

That ain't the government shrinking at all.

That's a military base shutting down. Military does not equal Government.

The government at every level is way too big and way too involved in too many things.

True, but the money to pay those people comes from the gov, which comes from us. So in terms of smaller government equaling the gov spending less, I'm down. At least until they spend it on something else. So what's that.... about a 3-minute window of bliss? :winkwink:

They can't.

The US uses 1/4 of the world's resources, and needs remote strength to ensure continuation of supply. If you wrap up the US influence around the world then the US will either need to do the unthinkable .. reduce consumption of resources, or will suffer from countries and administrations being able to decide where to allocate and where to sell their resources.

I guess when I hear about size of government, I think of the size of the bureaucracy. Which is just plain ridiculous these days.

That's the other side of it, sure. I believe there's clearly not enough regulation. (Wall St., Big Oil, Pharma, etc). Gov needs to step up in that area. That means more people will be required, but they'll have money from the people they just eliminated, so they can hire new people to fill the new positions they need to create more regulations. That right there is job creation folks, in action.

Another problem solved.

Government is never going to get smaller. It's a buzz word to get elected.

Contrary to popular myth, every Republican president since and including Herbert Hoover has increased the federal government's size, scope, or power - and usually all three. Over the last one hundred years, of the five presidents who presided over the largest domestic spending increases, four were Republicans. Include regulations and foreign policy, as well as budgets approved by a Republican Congress, and a picture begins to emerge of the Republican Party as a reliable engine of government growth.

It wouldn't surprise me if eliminating some jobs and hiring as many or fewer people in other areas would be spun by the gov't as creating jobs, lol. Not an Obama thing but a gov't thing...they all do shit to make things look better than they are.

So because you are bringing up republicans, it's ok for democrats to do the same? Pretty lame statement.
Obama has increased the national debt 25% in 18 months
Obama has increased the size of the government the same
And last I checked, he's not a republican, lets focus on the present instead of blaming the past and get something done.

Yet the economy , jobs, wars , those problems are still there and don't look like they are going to improve any time soon

The Demon 08-10-2010 09:05 AM

I don't think anybody pays attention to BFT3K on here. His only job is to deflect factual blame from the Democrats and to generally make a fool out of himself.

Find apples, pears, berries and other fruits growing outside on trees to eat for free.
Catch a wild rabbit or goose. It's possible to find food for free. Good luck.

I didn't say that at all. I was merely stating the fact that the republitards, who want people to believe they are for smaller deficits and smaller government, are simply full of shit... much like the demon is full of cum after one of his famous all-male gangbangs. :2 cents:
