Getting started with SEO

Okay here's the deal. I've run some sites before, usually bought them getting around 20-100 uniques and I'd find that they would increase in size to around 1000 a day.

Times have changed however and i've got myself a portfolio of sites from scratch, hence I need to engage in the dark arts known as SEO.

Could anyone give me a link to a decide guide to get started on (I'm both mainstream and adult) or some tips.

Thanks alot, appreciate it.

High quality on your content and ofc unique...proper titles, proper tags, etc etc etc.

Try out Wordpress on 1 site and try target some long tail keywords.

See here's the thing. I've got a personal wordpress site (not listing it here :1orglaugh) and it ranks number 1 in google without any work for some words, but for the word I want it to rank higher for, I'm around 10th in google....

seobook has a lot of tools that are free, get them, they work
Incoming links are what I've been told are the best, so one of the things I'm going to do is build free sites that point to the main site

Sounds like you just need a few more backlinks that use the keyword you rank #10 for.

The rules of SEO seem to change rather quickly now-a-days...especially if you're hunting for Google. Google Caffeine = ninja gaiden.

Most of the info you'll find on SEO is more of a "base" for you to build your own ideas on. People, especially gurus, only release info once the information's relevancy no longer benefits them as much as it used to....they create an info product...and resell it. Then people steal it, add a sentence or two...and resell it again.

Best of luck to you though. Understanding the "base" that you need to further your SEO studies is a long, but beneficial, process.

One tip: if something you read seems "fishy" -- it usually is. Don't do it...or risk playing in the sandbox.

When you are new or learning the trade, only 2 possible things can happen.

1. You get lucky, do everything right, and wait a few months for solid results.
2. You try lots of everything, nothing works, and you've 'tarnished' your shit.

There is only one really good way to learn the trade or art of SEO, and that is just build a great site and learn proper practices as you go. One that is original, unique and really offers something to the surfers. Many of the exact things that you will accomplish by doing this, is what people are trying to 'mimic' or replicate, and just what the engines are looking for in their quality listed sites.

Pick out a niche, the keywords you want to take, and start build a single site focused solely on that subject. Pay more attention to building a great site with highly targeted content then to meta tags, or keyword density.

While you are working hard on your great site, start researching SEO and methods that work. Don't worry about stuff that 'may work' or works for some, but focus on the commonly known, and accepted beliefs, and start there.

It's pretty tough to give you actual tailored advice for your situation, as I don't know what you have as far as resources, time, and experience. I guess the main point is, if you aren't a plumber, you wouldn't run pipes for a new building, if you weren't a Electrician you wouldn't do the wiring in a house either. So don't touch the SEO of your site until you are a little more educated in it.

You wont get penalized EVER for not doing enough SEO, you could get penalized for attempting to do SEO and blowing it by making bad mistakes.
