Commodore 64 Is Back, All Souped Up

Come on, you know you want one.
Commodore USA is recreating the classic Commodore 64 with modern software and the exact replica of the original beige chassis.

The new computer has 4 GB of DDR3 memory, a one terabyte hard drive, HDMI compatibility, an Intel Atom 525 CPU and Nvidia Ion2 graphics.

It also includes six USB ports, a 6-in-1 media card reader and an optional Blu-ray Disc drive.

The Commodore 64 from the 1980s is an 8-bit home computer built by Commodore International. During the Commodore 64's market-shelf life, sales totaled 30 million units, making it the best-selling single personal computer model of all time. It was priced at $595.

Commodore USA said there is "overwhelming demand from former Commodore users worldwide" for the new machine and plans to roll out a model before the end of the year. So far, the company has not listed a price for the new machine.

I think I might still have one of those piled in a box somewhere. Just found my original (circa 1979) Atari VCS and a bunch of games in my mom's basement after she passed away this June. No joysticks, though, so I'm a bit bummed.

CunningStunt 08-27-2010 11:45 PM

I'd have preferred a remake of the Atari 520ST, complete with a remade Jet Set Willy :)

NetHorse 08-27-2010 11:49 PM

haha, I never had a Commodore 64, I had Colecovision though. :thumbsup

I wonder if I will have to re-align the blueray every month or so like I had to do with their external 1541 floppy disk drive.

Raf1 08-28-2010 12:34 AM

I wonder how well it will sell. It's not something I would care about buying

Its pointless. My 2600 cost $329 back in 1979. (The reciept is probably worth more than the machine). You can buy a new one for about $20 now.

As well, everything is available for free on the internet. Emulators rock.

I had an Apple II+ and IIe later then i had to write the first GUI like windows for the fucker since my friend got a LISA lol and i was jelous and didnt have money for one so tur the IIe into one with the GUI interface using a joystick not a mouse but it worked and looked awesome :)

cambaby 08-28-2010 01:09 AM

About fucking time, retro computer looks rock.

John-ACWM 08-28-2010 01:25 AM

As the demand says, it will sell. It's always nice to reminisce.

I'm holding out for a 2010 version of my first gaming machine "Pong" :1orglaugh

In 1984 I had a IBM PC jr.. that would be sweet to put todays PC into that minus the 13" monitor that came with it

halfpint 08-28-2010 04:34 AM

It's not a replica. It is a modern PC (dualcore2, 1 tb hdd, 4 gig ram) in an old case.

The 64 was the forst computer I ever had. Followed that up with an Amiga 500 that I spent a fortune on getting 1meg of memory and an external disk drive. Good times!
