you probably have a bunch of spyware loading in normal windows that can't load in safe mode.

VHNet 10-21-2010 06:22 PM

IE, Firefox....or all browsers?

That doesn't mean shit these days. Try downloading 5 - 7 good free anti-malware utilities, update them, disconnect your internet and then run scans in safe mode with all of them. No one utility gets everything.

Ethersync 10-21-2010 06:36 PM

Scan your computer with Malwarebytes if you haven't already.

is that the one that needs the results to be deciphered by an expert?

No it's one of the best ones:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

I think you are thinking of Hijack this?

scubadiver626 10-21-2010 06:41 PM

The difference is a service, device drive, program at startup.

Uninstall any program you dont use.

start/run "msconfig" uncheck startup programs and services you dont need. You can always turn it back on so don't worry. Tweaking this often makes a huge difference in system performance.

appreciate it, i will do this also.

VHNet 10-21-2010 06:43 PM

if you go to ninite.com they've got spywarebot, malwarebytes, ad-aware, and superantispyware where you can download/install in a matter of minutes. no need to track them all down.

run them all.

then get/run hijackthis.de (direct download link on the top/right of the page).

save a log file (it'll pop up in text format afterward, and paste the entire file/results on hijackthis.de)

only check/fix things that are known threats (hijackthis can screw your PC big time)

---

if it's still a problem, run "msconfig" via start menu, go to "startup" tab...and uncheck anything that you do not know what it is (except for Microsoft Corp stuff and antivirus).

That should fix it

signupdamnit 10-21-2010 06:46 PM

I should mention make sure to disable the resident or on-demand scanner for the extra ones you get or they could cause incompatibilities with one another and slow things down further. Only one or two (at most and if compatible) should be active at a time. You can manually scan with as many as you want though.

fuck, there's easily 100 or more start up services showing, if i click hide all microsoft services the list shrinks to 5, is it ok, to not worry about the ms services?

No, probably not OK... Finish scanning your system first with Malwarebytes. If there is a virus or trojan causing this it should find it.

Ethersync 10-21-2010 06:52 PM

Did you install any new software recently or update any drivers?

That was pretty quick. Did you do a quick scan or a full scan? You should do a always Full scan when you suspect an infection.

Also that you fixed it by using msconfig is cool but if you don't know what put it there that is highly suspect. I'd still run some full malware scans. :2 cents:

dyna mo 10-21-2010 07:10 PM

the flexnet license is my adobe license, i have no idea wtf the apple string is or the install table manager thingie

You might try to turn one on again, reboot and check if everything is still OK, then the next and the next, etc. Then you can pinpoint the problem service.

adult-help 10-21-2010 07:17 PM

so unchecking these few services resolved the internet speed problems? because i have similar problems with win 7...

good idea, i'll do that now, i looked up that apple id string, it's something having to do with bojour service http://developer.apple.com/networking/bonjour/faq.html

i'm going to guess that was the prob.

I bet you are right. iTunes fucked up my laptop so bad I had to just remove it. Works fine on a Mac, but it does not play well with Windows 7... at least for me.
