DWB 10-24-2010 02:16 AM

Thanks guys, will look into some of those.

First time with a touch screen. How long did it take you to get used to typing on it?

HTC for the win.

No carriers or contracts over here (nothing locking you down). Even the iPhones come unlocked. :upsidedow Most mobile use here is simply topping up your SIM card at 7-11 or at the ATM.

Do a search for Swype. If you can't download it for your phone, let me know and I'll send you a proper APK. You'll be amazed by what it does.

This app is like last resort of you want to tether. At this point, the functionality to turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot is built into the OS.

Ethersync 10-24-2010 09:54 AM

First you need to install Barcode Scanner. Search for it in the Market. Then you can scan the QR codes in my post with your phone and get the Apps easier. This video explains it...

Now for the Apps...

Swiftkey

I couldn't get the hang of Swype so I use this. Works great.

NewsRoom

This is my favorite RSS reader. The review below is not current. It's updated a bit. Great app!

Handcent SMS

Trillian

Best IM app I have found for Android.

Skype

Was a little buggy at first, but works pretty good now for me.

If your cell provider blocks 3g calls on Skype use this version to make it work: http://www.xeudoxus.com/android/Skype.apk

That should get you started...

If you root your phone you can often take advantage of the built-in Android Wi-Fi hotspot. If you don't want to root your phone and void your warranty you can install EasyTether instead of PDANet. It's a one time $10 charge and therefore cheaper than PDANet.

Yeah...if you at all like to "tinker" with your toys, the Android OS is perfect for that.

Check out XDA Developers for a ton of hacks, apps, themes, roms, kernels, etc.

I played Pocket Legends MMORPG. It's like a mini-WOW and pretty cool.

JMBrandie 11-16-2010 12:10 PM

Google voice, definitely.

Rick Diculous 11-16-2010 12:14 PM

Google Goggles
ICQ
Advanced Task Killer
Msn Talk
Ebay

bronco67 11-16-2010 02:04 PM

Angry Birds. I love to play that shit while sittin the tub.

epitome 11-16-2010 02:11 PM

Tired of waiting for iPhone for Verizon, and up for a new every two, I got the Droid Incredible the other day. Best decision ever. I've downloaded about 40 apps so far and haven't had to pay for a single one.

Goggles is a great app -- take a picture of something and Google will try to identify it and if it can, will search for whatever is in the picture.

Let me know if it figures out how to search ladyboys after you take a photo of one.

Edit: I downloaded and am using WiFinder for easy wifi management.

You'll get used to typing. I seem to be more accurate the faster I type and more I fuck shit up. It will figure out what you're trying to say.

epitome 11-16-2010 02:14 PM

Oh, meebo for instant messaging. It will let you login to just about every messenger. And Skype since you're overseas. And Google Voice. Probably already mentioned here.

candyflip 11-16-2010 02:15 PM

If you want to automate things on your phone, check out Tasker. I have mine set up to do things based on location, time, date and more.

I have one instance set up to send a text msg to my buddy when I'm about 1/4 mile from his house letting him know that I'm just about there.

Probably the neatest app I've purchased.

LaoTzu 11-16-2010 02:32 PM

All of the above plus a few more for fun:

Games:
Live Holdem
Robo Defense
Paper Toss

Utilities:
Task Manager
Uninstaller

Other:
Google Sky Map
Bubble
Safe Neighborhood
Pandora Radio

Get used to using gmail, google calendar, docs, etc... and your phone will actually make your life easier.

gaffg 11-16-2010 02:37 PM

time to get an andoid phone

themadwriter 11-16-2010 02:59 PM

I know this is off topic. If anyone knows any android developers looking for work, please feel free to send me a message.

I have a variety of Android Developer positions open in the Bay Area.

Wizzo 11-16-2010 03:17 PM

Google Sky Maps and Yelp(finds local places with reviews) are a couple I use fairly often.

NaughtyRob 11-16-2010 04:04 PM

I am learning it, it will be a bit though. Probably way too late then. lol

What sort of development? Email is in my sig if you want to send some more details.

UnUnited 11-16-2010 04:47 PM

PdaNet -for tethering 3G internet , works great while traveling in hotels
Scan2PDF - document scanner / use the camera to scan/send documents
Maps - Google GPS with driving directions
Box.net - Access any of your files in the cloud
Voxofon - Cheap seamless international calling ( This is an amazing app hardly anyone knows about , simular to Rebtel calling but it automates everything for you , install it once on your phone and it pops up when ever you go to make a long distance call and it saves you money by putting your call threw to a local # that calls abroad threw Voip technology )

oscer 11-16-2010 05:35 PM

Scanner Radio / Text Bank / Our billing software app / GPS

Lots of Android developers on oDesk (11 pages for the US). They are all looking for work.

Patience ... now you have to pay full price for a phone that supports 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution). :upsidedow

fusionx 11-16-2010 05:57 PM

Hey DWB - can you use 3G over there without a contract?

Also - please let me know if the GPS actually works. I need a phone with a decent GPS. Thanks!

Just search youtube and their will be a video showing you how to get 3 stars.

My favorite feature is that voice recognition actually works. I dictate most of my text messages without ever typing on the keyboard and it's usually always 100% accurate.

I'd rather do that than have continued using my EnV Touch for another day.

CYF 11-16-2010 06:10 PM

surprised no one has mentioned connectbot for ssh access.

IP Cam Viewer is good too, I monitor my home security camera with it.

Simple Whois Domain for whois lookups on the go.

Penthouse Tony 11-16-2010 06:22 PM

Pretty much anything made by Google is awesome and worth trying. I use Listen, Voice, Navigation, and Talk the most.
