How often do you try to improve yourself?

thanks to shap for the jump start this morning. :)

A few weeks ago we noticed that some of our lives had not changed in a while and were stuck waiting on bigger changes that were often delayed and taking forever. As a result why not try something new? Every day try do at least one thing to improve yourself from a new perspective. Try implementing this in both your personal & business life.

I'm curious how often do you try to improve yourself? Do you set it and forget it (life)? Or are you continually trying to improve?

cwd 10-25-2010 09:03 AM

I masturbate daily, does that count?

I am what I am...and my life is what it is. The only area that needs improvement is my health and that is not going to happen.

You are absolutely correct.

your health will not improve. You have already decided that.

I didn't make that decision...the irreparable injuries I received in '91 decided for me.

we are already perfect. nothing to improve. only thing to do is strip away illusion until you realize that.

and instead of using that to your advantage to grow stronger, you have chosen to allow yourself to be crippled by it.

it is your decision. and it always has been. :2 cents:

more accurately, we are all perfectly imperfect.

there is always room for improvement, even on perfection.

Wrong. The irreparable injuries...crippled me. I have battled with myself every day since '91...and it is ongoing every day...to keep from offing myself to rid myself of mind numbing...teeth grinding pain. Yet I am still present and accounted for and still as active as I can be. My dog and I still have our outings...fishing...camping...and occasionally taking a trip.

Thus I conclude that I am stronger than the average bear.

Then I too am crippled.

I am crippled by indecision, worry, doubt, injuries i have sustained throughout my life, immeasurable pain i have endured, people i have lost, depression, despair, hopelessness, anger, rage & hate.

but i will lie to myself, i can do nothing to change it, and that i am stronger for it. I will seek sympathy because no one understands me. I choose to be less than what i can be, because it's easier.

Not as often as I should, actually that's not accurate, I do things to improve my life constantly, now how long it lasts is a very different story.

It's too easy to fall back into bad habits unfortunately.

Its good to improve but not to change too much. Add things to a business venture, have alot of eggs in a basket, but its hard to hold a few baskets with a few eggs in each basket.

Why improve on happiness. Self contentment is the most important part of life, & pleasing others. If you start every day positive & enjoy yourself, then most of what you do comes together. You can always work for more, but no need for change or you didnt have it right yesterday :2 cents:

this reminds me of that line from fight club- self-improvement is masturbation.

i never understood wtf that meant.

Since '91...I have been all that I can be and...in my opinion have accomplished a lot. I have attended University and accumulated well over 200 credits. I have traveled the entire United States except for Alaska. I have traveled out of country. My passion is fishing and camping...I used to hunt but quit hunting some years ago...and I still fish and camp. I made a small fortune and have more money available to me than I will spend in my life time. I did all of this while suffering with severe mind numbing pain 24/7. I totally retired a few years ago...but still work at the computer daily to occupy my mind.

Once again I will state that I considered myself to be very strong or I would not continue to live for another hour.

I view improvement more from a perspective of paring away imperfections, not so much adding new things, but removing undesirable things. Minimalism.

and i do apologize for any misunderstanding on that.

a better word than "self-improvement" would be "refinement".

Your reply there reminds me of a quote from Richard Bach from his book 'Illusions'

"Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours"

In response to your query, I try to improve myself as often as possible. I would love to think daily but that's not realistic or I would be enlightened as fuck all by now.

I rely on others in most cases and when someone points out a shortcoming I might have I work towards improving it. Overall I am happy with who I have become through the course of my life but I never shut the door on the idea thatit and myself could be significantly better

LOL. Does "getting into books" really take work? Find a book about something you are interested in. Bam. Done.

I am far from being happy. Truly...there is not anything that this world has to offer that will make me happy. I am what I am and my life is what it is.

1. Working on hating people less
2. Trying to evlove out of adult industry
3. Thinking that I have much more buddies in ICQ then real life and that's near wrong
4. Secretly in love with Natalie Portman and hiding that from her and my wife :) so, mastering conspiracy!

Yngwie 10-25-2010 10:13 AM

What I did to improve my life is think more positively and stop focusing on the negative things in my life. This keep me more focused on succeeding. Also, seeing as I have a leg disability (Spastic Paraplegia) that worsens as I age I do everything that I can to not let it get me down. Hell, I still ride a mountain bike even though most of the time it's extremely hard. In the end, everything keeps me positive and allows me to work more efficiently.

woj 10-25-2010 10:17 AM

Someone once said, something along the lines of:
(it was actually about "learning" I think, but is just as true in general)

"If you aren't improving, you are actually falling back"

which is very true :thumbsup

Constantly, man, constantly. So far, I've done: fasting for health and focus purposes, volunteering on medical missions to help the rural poor here in the Philippines, fund drives for those who are less well off, etc. Still not enough but working on it.

I notice you, alike the model above, have a wider shoulder, toned tum & slimmer v than kickboxers, I take it youre a regular swimmer?

Personally, while training I idolised the blinding Jean Claude. My tums gone a little at the moment, still with 6 maybe pushing 8 pack but coated with a slim bike tyre :winkwink: Ill get it all back one day :thumbsup

in the context of the movie he was referring to the calvin klein ad with the model that just shows his abs. It can be used more generally too though meaning that most of the things in life that we think are self improvement (ie 6 pack abs) aren't improvement at all and serve no purpose other than vanity which, if anything, is a weakness, that being masturbation.

_Richard_ 10-25-2010 01:18 PM

Rochard 10-25-2010 01:58 PM

I try to improve on myself often.

One of the recent improvements is a task list. I was taking a wicked dump (seriously) and thought to myself "I'm already organized, so what can I do to make myself more organized?" I gave it some thought and remember that google has a tasks list. Change my life really.

Some of the other changes I've made....
- I've moved a lot of my documents over to google documents. No more searching for stuff on my computer, I know exactly where it is.
- A while back I decided to check my smoke alarms every holiday. Been working like a charm. Halloween is coming up.
- I'm currently looking into my phone bill. I'm still using a 623 Phoenix area code phone number, and I'm paying out the ass for my phone. I recently discovered they were charging me an extra $30 a month for a service I already had and of course no one caught it. I'm looking at phones, and all of the phones are the same these days, so it's a matter of price....

I'm sure I coudl think of other stuff too.

shermo 10-25-2010 02:02 PM

Everyday since my daughter was born. So far things are improving across the board: Finances, goals, time spent with family, and she's teaching me new things everyday (about fatherhood, and about being a better person).

Cyber Fucker 10-25-2010 02:56 PM

I try to improve myself every single day, but I often lose this hard battle.

CarlosTheGaucho 10-25-2010 03:10 PM

I actually have three .txt files on my personal laptop

- to read
- to learn
- to improve

All those things are connected together.

I firmly believe that the constant feeling of not being good enough and need for improvement is what always drove me forward - to work, to study, to repeatedly transform my body, kick many habits, improve many relationships etc.

No...I do not have a need for having a woman in my life...or really anyone else. My dog and I live alone and I prefer it that way. BTW...I was married multiple times when I was in the Army...and even though I continued to have several fuck buddy girlfriends...I was never interested in a real relationship. When sex simply became more painful than joy...I gave up the girlfriends several years ago.

Don't know what happened to you but they are doing some AMAZING things in China with stem cells. I know a guy who could hardly walk up a flight of stairs due to his pain from an accident. Now he RUNS a few miles a day and is in fantastic shape.

For some medical treatment, you need to look outside the borders of the USA. Law prohibits them from working on some of the truly ground breaking stuff, which in turn shorts everyone living there.

That seems to make sense all the people in our society we think are doing the best, tend to be people who really don't think they are worthy...so they are constantly trying.

I am reading more books.

Rather than re-organizing, I am jumping into projects and getting them done.

This weekend, I got my "Diving for Science" certification from Texas State University so I can help on the science dive teams.

This week I am trying to learn at least one new software program to improve my work output.

And, there is always the "Honey-do" list.
