Have you ever heard of hosting company charging you money to use their DNS?

They give you 5 domains on their DNS and then charge you for more?

They want you to setup your own DNS and use it moving forward?

Barefootsies 10-27-2010 08:30 PM

Nope. I can't say I have heard that in 13 years of doing sites.

However, there are a number of ways a host could opt to nickel and dime you.

There is more than one kind of DNS service, and some companies specialize only in DNS services.

DaddyHalbucks 10-27-2010 08:42 PM

I think webcom used to do that back in the day.

Not where you host a server or a server account. Never heard of that.

If you have your own server VPS or Dedicated and 2 ips compile your own DNS server. If you need high capacity then pay for a specialized service or get a separate server as your DNS server.

are two backup DNS servers I use ? their free service is limited. However, they are DNS services not hosts in datacenters.

NameCheap offers free DNS service for your domains. So you can move your domains there and use their DNS to direct your domains.

Klen 10-28-2010 04:39 AM

Well, maybe you encounter company which offer hosting and dns.I do know some companies who do that.

seeandsee 10-28-2010 04:41 AM

charhinng DNS service, they can charge add domains but not DNS, IT JUST TOO GREEDY

mrsmut 10-28-2010 06:24 AM

dns service is part of hosting service.

Some companies offers different hosting services and the cheapest one is "only dns" allowing to point the domain to any ip you want, it's not part of domain registration service.

woj 10-28-2010 07:07 AM

never heard of anyone doing that

GetSCORECash 10-28-2010 07:16 AM

Yes, and it is very common. Nothing is FREE, if you get FREE DNS you are paying for it in your monthly bill and/or you are getting a poor service.

The better the DNS... UltraDNS provide a lot of services. Look at the Penthouse, Playboy and you will see that they pay for DNS services.

I'm at the moment talking to someone that only offers 10 FREE domains, and as a secondary DNS service, not even as a primary, but they are giving me a full gig of transit at prices which can only be attained at the 10gig mark.

EZRhino 10-28-2010 08:01 AM

When ever I hear of a host nickle and dime services or say yes to everything you say for one really low price. Run as away as fast as you can.
