ICQ forced an update on you?

russian bastards forced me to upgrade - any way to re-install ICQ 6.x?

Highest Def 10-29-2010 05:30 PM

http://www.oldversion.com/ICQ.html not sure if they have it setup to force 'upgrades' on the old - old versions or not.

Adraco 10-29-2010 05:37 PM

Yepp, I was forced over to the new 7.2 version tonight.

Be careful during upgrade / installation. Be sure to select custom install, and mark off anything which has to do with ICQ search and other extra shit. It's probably designed to try to take over your browser and stuff, install another worthless toolbar which you don't need.

Also, after upgrade is done, try to read message history from someone, it will then come back and say "empty" but it will also be a link in the bottom left corner where to click to atomatically import message history from ICQ 6.5.

fatfoo 10-29-2010 05:38 PM

I was forced to upgrade. The program does not let users load it unless users have the latest version.

nickutis 10-29-2010 05:39 PM

I got so tired with ICQ so I just switched to Trillian - no fucking ads, nobody forces you to update and stuff

u-Bob 10-29-2010 05:39 PM

use miranda-im instead.

V_RocKs 10-29-2010 06:39 PM

2003b still here and still going strong.

I lost all my contacts and connections with trillian...I loved it until that point...

Rochard 10-29-2010 06:42 PM

I was forced to upgrade this morning. Fuckers hijacked my fucking firefox search settings.

Bastards.

You all need to move over to skype!

AzteK 10-29-2010 06:44 PM

anyone tried http://www.pidgin.im ?

d-null 10-29-2010 08:17 PM

it forced me too, and since then my system seemed unstable, and it set itself to autorun on startup

I ran an uninstaller to stop it from running and now I only open icq when I really need to, I think it is time to stop using icq

That's what I use. Nice and clean without all the crap.
I began using it after ICQ installed its search on my PC despite doing a custom install.

hmm so it's not like trillian where you have a single sign-on?

machinegunkelly 10-29-2010 09:02 PM

if they're forcing an update, there's likely a reason.

I Miss messages like crazy, perhaps due to some using older versions? I don't know but it's possible for sure.

AzteK 10-29-2010 09:03 PM

and no skype eh

PAR 10-29-2010 09:06 PM

ICQ tried a couple days ago and I was able to stop it by killing it and just restarting...
This afternoon it forced it and killing it did not work so now I have the new crop. Importing history crashed 3 times so I just put it in to a data base so I can search it as needed.

mostly I use email and skype

Machete_ 10-29-2010 09:21 PM

I was forced to upgrade too.

At first ICQ 7.2 looked atrocious. But then i tweaked the looks a bit, downloaded the banner removal tool and now it's actually pretty decent.

Mutt 10-29-2010 10:01 PM

i did the custom installation, UNCHECKED the icq toolbar and whatever else, and what do you know - fucking ICQ toolbar/search in Firefox. uninstalled the toolbar and it's still there - maybe i have to reboot.

NaughtyRob 10-29-2010 10:02 PM

I use Adium on my Mac. The only thing that sucks is that I dont get offline messages, but fucking ICQ sucks balls on a Mac, they stopped at version 2 or something.

Jim_Gunn 10-29-2010 10:27 PM

I have been afraid to upgrade for quite a while now. ICQ 2001b is working great for me still.

Barry-xlovecam 10-29-2010 10:36 PM

I use LINUX Pidgin. (Multi messenger like trillian.) My ICQ went down on my LINUX last night but loaded OK on the old windows in the other room. Now I know why it went down — they had to fix the Pidgin server to log into ICQ's servers. I thought that was it — this thread confirms ICQ server was the issue.

I use Adium as well for ICQ and it has been pretty solid for the most part. I tried the Mac version of the Trillian alpha but went back to Adium.

The Duck 10-30-2010 03:55 AM

Broke my Miranda.

GTS Mark 10-30-2010 05:34 AM

during installation click custom and uncheck all the misc junk. its the same as with all previous versions.
edit: never mind my comment, didn't notice you said you did custom install. never had a prob with it personally

btw to get back msg history from previous version in icq go to menu > contacts > message history & click "import history" link in lower left side of the window

Jarmusch 10-30-2010 06:21 AM

When asked if I wanted to install the new version, I clicked 'No', then clicked 'Sign In' again and it worked. No need to install the update.

I see, maybe it only lets you click 'No' a set number of times..

BittieBucks Eric 10-30-2010 06:27 AM

MSN has done the same in the past.
