a question for webmasters outside the US

Mistakenly on Wednesday I wish a webmaster a Happy Thanksgiving, I said it like this;

Jim (10:03:11 24/11/2010)
no problem at all (omitted for privacy), if you are located in the US have a Happy Thanksgiving :)

Omitted for privacy (10:04:10 24/11/2010)
no, im not, but thx anyway :)))

Jim (10:04:25 24/11/2010)
have a great thursday then! :)

Now you can see he handled it well but I am wondering. If you're not from the US and someone wishes you a happy (whatever US specific holiday it happens to be). Does that annoy you? I am just curious as hell

and here is a naked picture of a non-US resident to make the thread more entertaining :)

Send me a turkey sandwich and we'll call it even.

seeandsee 11-26-2010 09:00 AM

i am not, and you even stated if you are in us

Phoenix 11-26-2010 09:02 AM

i dont get annoyed at something like that

however, it is funny to assume everyone is in the usa

spazlabz 11-26-2010 09:06 AM

Years ago I wished a non-US webmaster a Happy 4th of July.....yeah his reaction was pretty strong and I learned my lesson LOL

CaptainWolfy 11-26-2010 09:09 AM

no it doesn't they have their own holidays and we have ours..

rogueteens 11-26-2010 09:12 AM

No, i wouldnt get annoyed but i would assume that you must be pretty ignorant of the world outside america.

loreen 11-26-2010 09:19 AM

I say "you too" and move on.
I'm not a chatty person.

Jack Sparrow 11-26-2010 09:21 AM

I love it when people say stuff like that to me.
I love the us and its holidays, so maybe its just me.

Happy belated Thanksgiving :1orglaugh

Not annoyed, just wondering why the rest of the world would be expected to know or care. Seems a bit late for a harvest festival too.

redwhiteandblue 11-26-2010 10:15 AM

Just doesn't really mean anything here. Like wishing someone a happy new year when it's March.

Agent 488 11-26-2010 10:16 AM

i find it deeply offensive.

I'm not an American, don't live in the US, but I can appreciate the underlying ideas of the 4th of July and I'd expect a non-US webmaster who took offense to you wishing him a Happy 4th of July to either not be to bright or to confuse the underlying ideas with imperialistic chest thumping.

CaptainHowdy 11-26-2010 10:29 AM

I don't wish anybody anything so I'm safe...

I would suspect the latter in that particular instance :thumbsup

sojproductions 11-26-2010 11:17 AM

what actually annoys me more is the politcal correctness that comes along with some holidays nowadays. people who get offended when someone wishes them "merry christmas" instead of "happy holidays". :-/

and you can wish me whatever you want, but don't expect that i keep all american holidays in mind - unless you volunteer to learn all czech holidays ;)

He was a dick then. If someone wished me Happy Bastille day I would be more upset I wasn't in France enjoying a vacation, than the fact that I got wished Happy Bastille day while still in the US.

It's hard to get me offended though. Happy-white-man-killing day wouldn't even stir me up and I'm about as white as can be.

XD2 11-26-2010 11:52 AM

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, I normally just reply with "Thanks, you too."

you're dead on imo about political correctness, if I wished (as an example) a Jewish person a Merry Christmas, I think it would be appropriate and a bit entertaining if they wished me a Happy Hanukkah. To me things like that are just well wishes and I will accept as many of those as possible.

That would be a mistake to wish me a Happy Bastille day or any other holiday like that. I would follow up with several questions regarding that specific holiday because I would be curious to learn about their customs and such. Could be a longer conversation then they were looking for! :1orglaugh

I hear ya on the not being offended by the kill whitey day, it would be funny (unless I was the one they wanted to kill) I am as lily as they come. I bet I could read a newspaper through my hand!

papill0n 11-26-2010 01:42 PM

fatfoo 11-26-2010 03:08 PM

Some people are annoyed when they are congratulated with an incorrect holiday.
