What hosting spec. do you recommend for something like this?

I recommend you Phatservers from my sig. I also have a 5k uniques on a mybb board and i had no problem with them

Bluehost has a FAQ entry that says they won't host adult content, and they define "adult content" pretty conservatively.

I think you need a dedicated unless you really know how to run the backend smoothly. Maybe a vdedicated will do it at www.dwhs.net they are $99 and powerful as hell.
