Help needed with duplicate Titles & Desc within FHGs
Hi guys, I run my own webmaster program and we produce our own content.
Via Google Webmaster tools, we are getting a lot of crawl errors relating to duplicate title and meta description tags within our affiliate FHG's. However each gallery has its own unique title and meta description. As you can see, this is being caused because of numerous affiliates using their ccbill ID's within the URL, making it look as if we have multiple duplicate pages. For example: examplegallery1.com/?id=111111 examplegallery2.com/?id=222222 examplegallery3.com/?id=333333 Can any webmasters out there assist on how we can get around this? As we are aware that crawl errors are not good! Do I need to set nofollow in the header of the galleries and stop google indexing them? Many thanks! |

Best thing is to simply have different titles in the <title> tag.

I think you are mistaken as to what I meant.
for exmaple, I release an FHG to affiliates. The url is for example gallery1.com (this gallery has a title and meta description) The affiliates add their id's to the end of it gallery1.com?=id 111111 gallery1.com?=id 222222 gallery1.com?=id 333333 gallery1.com?=id 444444 Which makes multple instances of that gallery url, which is being flagged as duplicate titles and descriptions in google webmaster tools. So as you can see, it is impossible to change the titles and descriptions for each url, as it is one gallery. |

All you need to do is add a canonical tag to the head of each of your galleries. This will tell Google to ignore all of those duplicates floating around and only consider your root gallery URL.
If you want to take this a step further, you can also go into your webmaster tools and set your affiliate ID syntax to be ignored. And you can also create an XML sitemap in the root of your FHG domain that includes all of the root gallery URLs. Both of these, like your canonical tags, will tell Google that you do not want all those duplicates considered for indexing. And you should really do the same thing for your paysite.. just as affiliate links are creating tons of duplicate URLs of your galleries, they're doing the same exact thing to your paysites, whether or not you're getting crawl errors.
