Blog posts seem to be better and better in these days, so I'd suggest to start with them. Use also links from images, not only from text. Good for long term strategy + they are permanent.

Personally I wouldn't buy hardlinks from footers (especially sitewide) and even sidebars.

This is great advice...you need dynamic AND unique content, and the best way to accomplish that is with a regularly updating source like blog posts.

If you are just looking for a quick "pump and dump", then you might not want to waste the time with unique content, but you will have a very hard time in the search engine rankings.

Make sure to sign up for the Webmaster Tools with all of the major search engines so you can track your progress and adjust where necessary. Also remember that it takes time to rise up through the rankings...you will see an initial bump with a new site, which will give you important traffic information to start, then you will fall back in the rankings and changes will happen more slowly from that point.
