Paysite Post Ratings? View count design?

When designing and programming pay sites, if you include a ratings or view count icon for the post, are those real ratings or view counts?

I'm designing a small pay site now and wanted to include ratings, but not sure if its standard to just make up the rating or to really allow a use to rate?

You can make it up or let the members rate. I prefer to let users rate on content.
