Not in a "club" like some scrote - Roederer house has been quoted as saying they don't give a flying fuck (what? thats my translation of the french) about all the rappers drinking it. Contrary to what you'll read above Cristal has a very clean taste and a good balance of flavor.

Perrier Jouet is also nice, but of course the very best is Krug Clos du Mesnil or Krug Clos d'Ambonnay.

Swear to god this actually happened at a webmaster show a few years back, no lie.

One night the guy is spraying Cristal with like Lia19 or some show hottie and the next day he asks me to buy him lunch because he's broke.

I bought some from world market once and was very unimpressed. Plus since I bought it from a store I only impressed the gay cashier that rang me up

Trust me, most of these idiots who are saying that it sucks are saying so for one of the following reasons:

1. They were expecting a girl to pop out of the bottle and blow them.
2. They don't know champagne and would not appreciate the subtleties that make high end champagnes different from one another. You really have to build your way up to it. That makes it somewhat understandable as to how someone might like the $100 PJ better. They might be able to tell the difference between the $40 PJ and the $100 PJ, but not the $100 PJ and the $300 Cristal. When you're able to tell the difference between something like the $100 PJ or the Veuve Ponsardin or an off vintage Dom, then you take the step up to better vintage Doms, Krug, and Cristal.
3. They are put off by the hip hop/flashy image of the brand. An image the company itself has tried to distance itself from.
4. They were offended by comments the Roederer CEO made when giving his own opinion about all the hip hop shout outs. Comments that led Jay Z to boycott.
5. They think it's fun to say it sucks because they enjoy playing the role of a contrarian even if they've never tried it.
6. They were already drunk when they drank it.

2) It would need some taste before you could appreciate it.
3) Oh shit it's a black hiphop thing? I best give up pussy, nice/fast cars, and money then!
4) No idea who Roederer is.. and I'm not a JayZ fan either.
5) I've had it several times, it's never been good.
6) Probably not... as when I'm drunk, I never drink anything that tastes bad for fear that it will come back up. Cristal would for sure be one of those drinks.


Let me add a #7... Cheap shit taste better, to prove it - blindfold yourself, taste several types, and rank them. The Cristal will be at the very bottom - like it always is for everyone that does this. Just like if you have cheap stuff vs. Cristal, almost everyone will say the cheap stuff is better if they have no idea which is which.

Cristal is the bud light of Champagne... oh it's drinkable, some people rave about (that it has taste)... but the rest of the world knows it's complete shit.

think im gonna avoid it for now and go for the hihgly reccomended stuff

This is bogus. Giving random people blind tastings tells you absolutely nothing about anything. Wine/champagne requires knowledge and education to appreciate it.

Just because you give a 21 year old kid a blind tasting and he chooses Boone's Farm over Screaming Eagle, doesn't mean it's better.

Well... if you blind taste it, and it tastes like crap - it makes no difference what knowledge or education you have about it - it's still crap!

Being that it tastes, no different than a $20 bottle of shit off the shelf, it has the same nasty after taste, it kills/covers the entire pallet and is strong enough in flavor to kill the taste of food. It's shit, by all factors.

I'm not into the snob crap.. the who, where, and with what. I don't need to pretend to be something I'm not - if it tastes like crap, it's crap! I'm not going to pretend it's good, no mater how much I know about it, I'll let others be sheep and pretend they're something they aren't.

If you're in our Industry, been to more than a couple of shows, and you haven't had it, then I don't really know what to say, other than get out more... :)

I agree with you somewhat but Jimmy 3-way has a point.. what if we blind taste tested you and gave you cristal, a wine cooler and some welches grape juice? If you are a big fan of grape juice you will say the third one is better, this doesn't make it the best champaign though :)

I have a feeling its an acquired taste like most alcohol.. I hated the taste of beer when i first started drinking it, even to this day it isn't my favourite thing to drink, but I do recognize what tastes better than others to a certain degree. If you aren't a big fan of champagne in general, which is probably most of us here being that none of us are prom girls or celebrate new year every week, then it would explain why most of us aren't fans, including myself. just my :2 cents: anyway.

Fruit juices and champaign are vastly differently... not really even worth comparing in any kind of taste test.

Like anything, from drink to food, always a huge group of people that like even the worst of things.

Beers are a great example... Several types of beer I don't like, actually very few that I do. But the ones I don't like, still have taste - just a taste I don't like.

Champaign, is like beer too me, most of it does not taste good to me - but they do have a taste. It's my personal preference if that taste is good or not.

I'm not saying Cristal isn't good to some people. Heck, if it was $20, I would say it's a great $20 bottle of Champaign. Why? Because $20 bottles of Champaign have a odd, off taste that sticks around after you drink it - much the same type of taste that sticks around with Cristal.

I'm not trying to judge this as in, good vs. bad here... I just think it greatly lacks in taste (compared to others posted here) for sure with it's price.

When you say 'sheep', are you talking about the 2 or 3 of us in this thread who actually know what we're talking about, or the 20 or so others who have been quick to mention how horrible their Kristal experiences have been while simultaneously touting a Perrier Jouet gift set that comes with pretty glasses?

I agree Hands down.. I had a bottle of Cristal Rose 83.. it was good.. but the Krug blew me away. By far the best champagne Ive ever had. 2nd fave had to be the Pol Roger Rose 88. That was tasty and was only $50 a bottle

Touching on what Jimmy said, I've had friends flat out say they don't like wine, because the wine they have had wasn't very good, OR they just didn't enjoy the style of the wine they had tried in the past. Give them something decent, or a style that they like and it changes their opinion. Everyone has their own particular tastes. Its just a matter of educating yourself on what they are

What am I wrong about? Blind taste tests have been used in the food Industry for 30 years to shape what we eat and drink today. What doesn't work, is 'asking' what people like... 99% of the population, truly have no idea what they do and don't like and blind taste tests have proven that.

If you wish to research this, look into the bottled spaghetti sauce history for years of research, stats and proof.
