LED.

Awesome picture, lower power consumption and does not heat up a room as much a the plasma does (which have an terrible life expectancy).

The LCDs are nice and a great cheap alternative.

Getting a PLASMA or LCD has nothing to do with the Internet :-)

yep, exactly, instead of TL lighting they use LED'S now to evenly distribute light behind the pixels.
LCD means light is passed TROUGH each pixel, even when pixel is BLACK there is still light passing trough them so black is not possible!
Black can only be done when NO light passes the LCD which isn't the case yet.
Plasma is the only way to show real black as there is no light passing the pixels as they emit light themselves. If pixels emit NO light you have real black!

I bought a 50in plasma a few years back, and wish I would have gotten the LCD or LED. I can't pause anything without turning it off in fear that it will burn into the screen and it gets pretty hot.

Dirty Minds 03-04-2011 05:31 PM

LCD = Liquid Crystal Display

LED = Light Emitted Diode

LED TV's are actually full LCD screens back lit by LED's

This "burn in" problem has already been solved many moons ago ...

BTW, there is NO LCD or LED, LED = LCD.
LED is just the way LCD pixels are back-lid
Few years ago LCD screens were back-lid by a TL tube on the far edges of the screen resulting in dark spots in the center of the screen.
With small screens this problem wasn't such big deal, but when higher res screens became mainstream the worse the problems got.
The only thing LED does is spread light evenly over a large surface area so all areas of the screen look as bright as the rest.

before my house burned down a few weeks ago I had a Pioneer Kuro 151FD.. 65" plasma.. THE BEST tv ever made. The picture on it was amazing. Unfortunately pioneer doesn't make tvs anymore but panasonic got their engineers and is making way better tvs. the new panasonic V30 is suppose to be almost as good as the kuro tvs

We had a LED-LCD in the master bedroom and frankly, it sucked compared to the plasma down stairs but we are comparing a 6500 tv to a 1000 tv.

thin-bezel LED LCD for me
they gobble even less energy than the cold cathode LCD televisions and run cool.

mightyjoe 03-04-2011 08:55 PM

get plasma
get led

= problem solved and locked this thread!

It depends on other crap besides if it's plasma or LED-LCD. Are we talking about LCD TN or IPS panels? That alone will make a huge difference.

I'd take a nice projector with a black diamond screen any day over plasma or lcd.

I have a LG 42" LED. Works nice for me.

I love my 55" Sony 3D LED. Although Sony's 3D is far from being anything to talk about, I love the actual TV. (NX810) Built in wireless, ton of video and music apps, very aesthetically pleasing. Plus I got the TV ridiculously cheap ;)

Plasma's will give you better color and less "motion-blur" but I still prefer LED over LCD or Plasma personally.

paymeback 03-06-2011 06:30 PM

Plasma is great in a dark room assuming you setup the colors right

paymeback 03-06-2011 06:33 PM

not to threadjack but any thoughts on which tv is better for an elderly person that wears glasses to watch tv?

Spunky 03-06-2011 08:07 PM
