The photographer of this particular photo has come forward to say the Asian guy in fact took the stick away from the fan that was smashing stuff with it and actually tried to stop people from doing more damage.

Growing up and in Vancouver and being a die hard Bruins fan found all this rather amusing last night. The Bridge and Skytrain crowd (Surrey) where the biggest part of the problem.
Went to the 5 after to celebrate watched a guy in a fight get stabbed a couple of times. Just another night out in a wanabee big city.

Yeah, I could see how you could think that, because well, it's actually true. Downtown in West Van, it's an absolutely amazing city, and by far the best I've ever lived in. Outside of West Van though, it's just another typical city, with some pretty shitty areas like Surrey or E Hastings.

It's weird, you can be walking around downtown in say Gastown, which is a really cool, posh sort of area. If you walk two blocks in the wrong direction, it completely transforms into this heroin haven. A bunch of homeless, schizophrenic addicts running around, tripping out, yelling up at sky giving god a lecture, etc. Feel sorry for the tourists who are just going for a nice stroll, and accidentally stumble into it.
