Agreed. I would come here first and rent or travel for a while and decide. I started coming in 2005 and made several trips to both Panama and Costa Rica before I bought and moved.

My son was 3 at the time, so it was even more important for us.

Self solvency used to be 200k plus 10k per dependent. It's now 300k. You can do it in property, deposit at Banco Nacional or a combination. Property has to be owned outright.

Sid70, search "Panama Self Solvency Visa" and you will get results.

I'd to go Aruba. I love that little island.

Or Iceland. I love that little island as well.

Ah, just read about it. Yeah, its too expensive. 1/4 of that makes you live in EU as a compnay owner.

There are cheaper options like this in Panama, too.

LongBucksVip 06-23-2011 08:47 AM

I'd live in Thailand.

Would it be too insistant to ask you to uncover those?

I been thinking about Costa Rica

DWB 06-23-2011 04:52 PM

Hard to say where I'd want to grow old because there are so many variables. But I do know it will be a bit out of the way where I'm left alone and you'll get shot if you come onto my property. Other than that, the least amount humidity the better. Probably near or in the mountains.

My guess is somewhere in Asia or South America, or a mix of the two. But I may get stuck in Thailand as a drug mule for a Burmese drug lord. Anything is possible I suppose.

shimmy2 06-23-2011 04:55 PM

i hear that costa rica is a good place for gringos to retire. i chose something a little more carribean so to each his own, so long as you gtfo of usa/canada its a lifestyle upgrade.

Inspiring thread, I was thinking of starting a similar one myself.

Some great input on Panama!

I have been mulling over a move out of europe for a while now and have been investigating various south american countries
Panama sounds great, I am seriously considering relocating for a few months to test if it is a good fit for me.

Anything negative about Panama that I might have missed?

amateurbfs 06-23-2011 07:52 PM

Costa Rica is getting expensive and has shit infrastructure, crappy internet, shit roads, bad food, and the list goes on and on... There are better countries than Costa Rica to live in.

Totally agree. Costa rica is overrated. Asia is cool but doubt could live there full time. Panama Sounds interesting.

one word: Autobahn.

the best thing is how slower traffic in the fast lane actually gets out of the way, unlike morons here in america...

Spunky 06-23-2011 08:37 PM

Vancouver Canada will always be home.very expensive to live in and has it's drawbacks.
Bahamas or some small exotic island would be cool though

joshuawk 06-23-2011 08:38 PM

Is PERU any good?

if you google 'living in peru' it seemss okay and economy is growing

NetHorse 06-23-2011 08:45 PM

As they say, "the grass always seems greener on the other side".

Nothing in this world is free. Whether you pay out the ass in sales, income tax, cost of living and still get mediocre health care or pay for your own premium privatized health care here in America.

Look at gas prices in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Look at the cost of a 3-4 thousand square foot house in Europe or Asia in a NICE suburban neighborhood

Look at the availability to get small business or venture capitalist loans in other countries.

America has it's problems, deficit, debt, illegal immigrants and unemployment rates.

Despite that, I can't imagine living in another country. Second home outside the country? Sure. Preferably somewhere in South America. :)

I like the Philippines but i hate the people there.

amateurbfs 06-23-2011 09:20 PM

Another thing people tend to overlook when living in foreign countries is the cost of living is based on locals not on expats.

Hey Glen, I have 1,000 acres in northern Tennessee I wouldn't mind selling soon. Absolutely breathtaking bluff and mountain views.. 45 minute drive from shopping malls. Hit me up on icq if you are interested.
