Just don't ...

AaronM 11-09-2011 08:09 AM

I'm a bit partial to labs.

Models and kinds love my lab and he's always been well behaved. :2 cents:

Labs are ok, to hyper imho.

Golden Retrievers are by far the best dogs I have ever come across, playful but very chill and smart but not too smart.

I understand that this wasn't one of your options but if you do come across one it should work for you.

The Mastiff's are too big.

If you don't take him, can you mail him to me?

They are awesome. And even though he's probably more inclined to want to cuddle and give you a big sloppy kiss...NO ONE will coming onto your property without permission.

Also, I have little kids and they have NO issue with the Mastiff. They are overwhelmed with my neighbors two 8 month old Labs though.

It's funny seeing Paul Markham say that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. :1orglaugh

You can't go wrong with a Lab mix.

I'd skip the Weimeraner, even though its mixed with Lab. Not good for someone that is not yet a "dog person". (I'm assuming you're not a dog person, since you're asking the advice of people who are).

Same goes for the Husky. You should be an experienced owner before having one of those -- or German Sheppard, or Rottweiler, or Pit Bull.

Those Lab mix dogs look great.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...691199383.html - Sounds like a lot of work, and looks like a drooler, so not sure about car travel.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...639756587.html - Top dog seems abused, lot of luggage(?). Roomie might be okay

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...685735219.html - Sounds like a cool dog. Might be a little energetic in the beginning, but daily walks will mellow him out

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb...683946504.html The formative years. Do you have time to devote?

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv...682596955.html - The kind of dog that attacked Buddy . . . . guess I have to build my trust level back up.

All I can say is if you have never had a dog before, be prepared. It is like having a kid, except you have to feed them every day. They are work and a responsibility as they will never grow up and move out on their own. Just be ready for a commitment.

Well said. The mastiff you have to plan on training her, with a big dog its a must. The people across the street have 200 lbs corso and Ive never seen a dog so well trained. My dogs are rescues and rescues tend to have emotional scars. My boston used to get beat to this day when you touch him he jumps first. They are alot of responsibility but I think they are worth it.

Mastiff's are great with kids, but best to get a puppy of any dog you're getting thats around your kids, they grow up around them and will even protect them. Best dog I ever had around kids was a border collie, that dog would coe after me if I screwed with the kids and she always herded them to keep them together, it was funny.

Also Mastiff's eat a lot, and well, crap 2 foot tall mounds!

Like I stated in the previous thread, I ended up with 2 lab mixes, one from the pound and one from ARC. One is a border collie / lab mix and the other is yellow lab / beagle mix. They are both good but the yellow one can be a douche at times with new things. We socialized him, took em to a local dog beach multiple times as a puppy. Brought new dogs into the house but he is just weary of new people dogs and kids. The black dog is really really good with everything. If you decide to go with a lab and happen to find a borador like I have, give it some thought.

http://www.designermixes.org/breed_i...6/borador.aspx
The black dog was described almost perfectly in this, other than possible aggression to new dogs.

I have a feeling you may end up with the mastiff lol. It is the only one you keep mentioning. In the end you are the only one who truly knows what you want. Best of luck to you with whatever you decide to go with.

asking about 2 mastifs right now.... always wanted a mastif. not sure why...

barcodes 11-09-2011 12:34 PM

Here is a before and after the borador. You can see the other one here as well.

I remember taking these two to dog beach once and meeting a couple with like 3 mastiffs. I remember them being very well behaved. My yellow dog did a play nip to one of the mastiffs who let out a roar that scared the shit out of em. No aggression though just a very loud warning lol.

barcodes 11-09-2011 12:43 PM

Here are a couple of short clips on the diff mastiffs
