I think I paid about $1k for the Final Cut Studio. And I still use it even after getting a free copy of the new Final Cut X.

Adobe Studio I got cheap through school.

Just be sure that you know of the limitations, if any, before buying student versions :winkwink:

I'm not sure what kind of programmer you (likes to have every bit of control over his OS?). Interesting to hear though.

I may well dual boot the Mac, or run a virtualized copy of Linux, though I have a Linux box right next to it. I'll give the walled garden a try, though. In many ways it's the opposite philosophy. With Linux, I have full control, and sometimes I need it, because the software funds on everything from a quad core server with Intel procedures to a $50 router and my ARM processor phone. Sometimes adjustments are needed. On the Mac, I'm not allowed to tweak anything, and supposedly shouldn't need to.

When I had a problem on a Linux box, I put some debugging statements in the kernel. I debug the information to the person responsible for that part of the kernel and they sent me a fix the same day. Imagine trying to get in touch with the Mac kernel developers! I'll count myself lucky if I get a support monkey who can read their script in English. Supposedly there should be know problems, though.

I also need to figure out how to use the Mac to talk ro the Exchange server. Yeah, Exchange as in Microsoft Exchange. I'm way put of my comfort zone here, learning all kind of new things. At least on the Mac I can drop to a command lined and it looks like Linux from there.

They only started allowing commercial work to be done on student licenses with CS4.

facialfreak 07-04-2012 03:16 PM

Adobe CS5 Master Collection - $2599.00

I bought a student license of MAYA in university ... normally MAYA is around 5K, but as a student we could purchase it for $100

I think it's partly because somewhere around 85%+ of Photoshop installs are either cracked versions or reimaged/reinstalled 30 day trials, so they might as well make some more money with a cheap non-restricted version :upsidedow

Expensive

Mac / Parallels / Windows XP
Haven't been to expensive yet, but the next upgrade for all will be the killer. Worst are
Mailwasher an email program that worked for OS X 6 but not OS X 7 so I use the XP version. But they calim a new one is coming, but noe Lion is coming.

ACT the best PMI ever built, but after version 6 (XP) sucks and there's no OS X version.

Lotus Approach - Absolutely the best database program ever built. Unfortunately IBM bought it 20 years ago and put it on a shelf.

So when tome comes, I'm going to have to hire someone to update these 3 as the new OS X & Windows won't support legacy programs

I did a contract with an Automation firm and purchased Solid Edge.

I didn't pay for it but I own it and it was roughly $7k maybe more.
