I'm personally leaning toward the opinion that this isn't an EMD penalty as much as it's just a removal of the natural boost that used to be given to them.

Strong EMD's are being left alone while weak ones are losing their rank.. it would make sense that this is because the bonus-for-being-relative thing was yanked.

:thumbsup

hotlink

You interpret that to mean that they removed any advantage of an EMD??

It is the low quality, not the EMD that is being penalized. :2 cents:

they've already penalised loads of low quality/spammy sites in other recent updates, why have they brought EMD into it at all, if they can identify low quality sites that easily?

Fine, have any EMD's you want to get rid of since they are worthless?

Like I work for them? How about, because it revealed even more low quality sites? Perhaps they want to eliminate all the low quality sites and EMD's gave them another can of worms to open.

why would it reveal more? if they can differentiate between low quality emd's and high quality emd's then they wouldn't need to apply it to just emd's they would apply to their whole index.

but as you say you don't work for them so you're guessing just like me.

Because even with low quality content the EMD's were getting an unnatural boost in the serps just by being an EMD. I do a lot with niche Adsense sites, and they are almost all .net and .org EMD's focusing on a longtail niche keyword. There were times when I would just install Wordpress on a domain and leave it empty until I could get around to posting content on it, and when I returned a few weeks later the EMD domain sitting on an empty Wordpress install with zero backlinks was already on the first page of Google.

It's going to be tough to 100% say what is happening for another week or two until the algo stabilizes, because it seems like a lot of sites with EMD's and quality content and backlinks were unfairly penalized, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if in another week or so they reclaim their rankings. But for the most part I have noticed that my EMD sites with quality content and backlinks were not penalized, while a bunch of niche EMD's sites I bought off BHW with crappy links and content were brutalized...

It looks like my traffic is down around 30% - Ya cant fuckin win with google haha.. its so fucking annoying.

I have one EMD which i believe it the best site in its niche - There is not much competition at all, if i look at the results in google all the top results are utter crap, not what the surfer is looking for at all.

If i search bing and yahoo im the second or third site there.. which i should be. These updates are getting a bit silly, google is actually making their results crap.

Hope you're right man, I took a rev hit from an EMD of mine that had a stable #3 rank for several months. I assumed it was collateral damage.

I am happy to see a few cybersquatters who got some .net or .org copy of our domains is gone from search results at least from first 3 pages. Good job google :)

beks001 10-03-2012 05:38 PM

This is why I've preferred to build based on a niche and brandable domain name versus an exact match domain or keyword. I've had a decent last two months but I'm afraid to say that I think trying to reach the 5k or 10k a month with 75 blogs isn't gonna happen. I need to have more faith I guess and just keep building or paying to get built. I'm convinced of I can find a way to make the surfer stick around longer I will be able to make at least 3-4k a month maybe. Still not done it yet tho. :-P
