it's important to do the work right but it's more important to do the right work

?Every minute you spend in planning saves 10 minutes in execution; this gives
you a 1,000 percent Return on Energy!?

I was about to post a similar one, but your one is better :

If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend six hours sharpening my ax.

And

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten.

I believe thats only true to a small degree. Most use "planning" as a means of procrastination as well. Just as its said that "perfectionism is the highest form of procrastination" where one might rationalize it as "doing things right, planning things out" and so on. A simple and quite horrible fact of this business (speaking as someone whos been in it since 98) is that the most successful people (say those doing 6 figures in ppc, running high traffic sites and earning over 6 figures a month etc etc) do very little planning. They have ideas, they do the minimal amount of planning and they go all in and don't stop and course correct along the way as reliable data comes back to make competent and disciplined decisions. I am not defending any particular method of approaching a business - its more about brain function and an individuals preferences in how they process, store and manage information, which hemisphere of the brain they rely more on and so on. So its not a surprise when a left brain thinker explains that a left brain approach makes sense. It could be right... but it is not the only right answer or "the best" answer. I think the single most common thread in success in most small business is the exact opposite of careful planning.... which is full blown A.D.D. and chaotic thinking, chaotic decisions but constantly moving forward 110%.

The principle is competing against yourself. It's about self-improvement, about being better than you were the day before.

When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap.

I like that one! Compete against yourself.
