No question that it's been cold this January, but as a resident we are prepared for it. Or at least we are supposed to be.

Except for that little gas shortage going on up there.

Minte, have you had to lower your heat? They told my mother in law because of some accident she has to keep the heat at 60 degrees.

Vendzilla 01-27-2014 11:39 AM

My high school closed once, the water main clogged up, I went for a drink and the water was dark green!
Was glad to go home!

That's for LP gas users, My home and business are all fueled by natural gas. It's a balmy 74 in my office. :)

At the temps they are having in IN you will have frostbite in less than 10 minutes.

It is not just schools that are closed; things like trash pickup are being suspended for two days so adults are not harmed by the weather.

I know Wi. has trash pickup today, I saw trucks this morning on my way in. But it still doesn't change that these days we aren't as tough as we once were. Nothing new about having brutal cold weather here.

Welcome to Winnipeg. Well, except for the uphill part. Twenty foot snowdrifts though, definitely.

So, why is your office temp set at 74? Ecologically speaking, that isn't very responsible.

Now, is that calling you out enough to get a free trip to WI? ;)

What you guys call brutal cold weather is a warm winter breeze here. :D

But I get what you're saying. Schools only close here after a huge blizzard or bad ice storm in winter. If we had to close all the schools every time the temp dipped below -30 our kids would all be 30 by the time they were ready to graduate high school.

I don't remember the schools ever closing 30 years ago. And if they did, it was a blizzard going on.

I'm sure it's a 'lawyer thing' ... you guys better shut down or a kid will get hurt and we'll be sued etc...

classy, you could have used the *all free passes to Wi are cancelled due to inclement weather* excuse!

Or perhaps it's a parental thing, since these days parents all seem to chauffeur their kids to and from school, something that almost never happened back in the 60's and 70's. Back then you walked, cold or not. In extreme cold you wore mitts instead of gloves, long underwear underneath your hand-me-down pants, an extra sweater under your winter coat, and a long scarf your mom wrapped around your head and face like 7 times. And of course the requisite tuque.

Maybe it's the parents who don't want to start up and have to sit in a cold car on these so-called 'extreme cold' mornings?

We bought a pellet stove this past fall and I have it cranked. Toasty 75 through the whole house. Had enough years of freezing my ass off, and we are immune from the LP shortage that has hit so many hard up here. Feel bad for those folks. Shit is selling for $7.00 a gallon. Two months ago or so it was $1.29.

I saw this coming when the Summer.....ahem......that's what the calendar said......was so damn cold in Wi. That shit just follows suit for the rest of the year.

Just found this weather map.

-37C overnight with the windchill here. More of the same for the next week at least, by the weather channel.

Good thing natural gas is still pretty cheap up here. Otherwise I'd be looking at pellet stoves and such.
