well, the question was not "whats the best band right now?".. i enjoy listening to their older albums too..

The Machine 03-15-2003 08:38 PM

the beatles and metallica would be two obvious picks.

tomax 03-15-2003 08:42 PM

thats your opinion, good for you. I disagree. I can hear a beatles song. any beatles song, and know its a beatles song immediatly. To me even with the varience in styles they all have the same flavor. For me there are better bands. Dark side of the moon and animals in my opinion blow away any beatles album hands down.

tomax 03-15-2003 08:43 PM

with metallica i cant call them a great band over all because they have slid so far down hill. I love their older albums. Master of puppets would be high on my list of all time greatest albums.

Okay then, tell me what a song like "I'm so Tired" has in common with other Beatles songs? Or what gives it the same flavour as a song such as, say "Revolution"?

Really, or how about Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Helter Skelter? You mean to tell me if you're familiar with Ob-la-Di, Ob-La-Da you could somehow infer that Taxman was also a Beatles song? What does Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey have in common with And Your Bird Can Sing?

tomax 03-15-2003 09:21 PM

im not saying from knowledge of one song you'd know all of them. Im saying that most of the songs have the same feel. Im not a musician so i can't tell you why i can only tell you thats how i feel about them. This is getting really funny to me, i mean cmon guys its a band...

Ever check out the forum on the metallica.com web site?

There's some funny shit posted on there, like this:

Hi....
Just downloaded 13 songs and 1 full album (Load).I guess Lar$ will have to get a day job at Old Navy to recoup all that lost income. Someday he'll be in one of those cheezy-ass commercials with Morgan Fairchild, hawking faggy sweaters.
Ughhhh......

If you do not agree 100% with this statement go listen to "Rain"(that bass part is genius), any track off The White Album or Abbey Road's second side. Sgt. Pepper is inarguably the most influential album ever and stands as a major artistic work of the 20th century. The question should read"...besides the Beatles?"

While it's not really an obvious or very popular pick, I'd have to say The Clash. They may not have started punk, but they went way beyond what any other punk band ever went. You've got the earlier raw stuff, may not have been as much as a symbol of punk as the Sex Pistols or the Ramones, but those bands are icons because all their songs sound the same and represent a single genre. The Clash would write a song in any genre. Some is gritty punk rock, some is reggae, some is more country, and alot of it is a great mix of all of those. There's so many bands that came after them who sound like a certain Clash song. They may have heavy influence on a punk band, a ska band, a reggae band or even a hip-hop group. Remember that the first major hip hop tour was The Clash/Granmaster Flash. I don't think there's any other band who's done so much for so many other artists and whole genres of music.

Fortunately, this isn't a "best-looking band" thread, becauee they sure don't LOOK like a bunch of musical geniuses.

Jesus, man, what can we do to fix this horrible situaution! Is there a pissing match in this anywhere? :1orglaugh How about...George Martin-the REAL 5th Beatle. Yay or nay? BTW I am not a huge Beatle collector like you but I do have a gem from my childhood. My first Beatles album was one of the Vee-Jay releases-I think it was called "Introducing the Fabulous Beatles!" or something.I can't go check cuz all my vinyl is in Phoenix W/ my bro- some of the tracks are "Chains", "Anna", "Boys","Do You Want to Know a Secret","Twist and Shout" and other covers I can' remember now. Unfortunately it is trashed to hell. :(

I'm a little fuzzy on it's history but Vee-Jay was a Chicago company that released two albums of material they somehow got the rights to after Capitol's release of "Meet the Beatles." UPDATE- interesting story http://www.dermon.com/Beatles/Veejay.htm
