The big thing here is that America is not the only place that has McD. They will survive but not as the mega place we know.

In my opinion...Fast Food is pricing itself out of existence.

McDonald's used to be the place I went to for a 40 cent hamburger, 25 cent fries, and a 25 cent drink.

Now you're lucky to get a combo meal there for less than $6

Fast food was always supposed to be cheap.
Hell, just a few years back I would go to Arbys and get 5 roast beef sandwiches for $5.
I went there 2 days ago and ordered food for 3 people.
The cost? $31 !!!!

They have raised prices on everything so fast and so high that it's taking them out of their market.

Especially sodas.
When fast food joints are charging $3 for 10 cents worth of soda...people on a budget just can't afford that.

And face it...most "rich" people don't eat fast food.
A lot of McDonald's customer base were people who don't have a lot of extra money and would grab lunch there on lunch break because it was fast and cheap.

No, I don't think it's the "nutritional value" that is hurting them. Most guys who work "real" jobs don't give a fuck about that. The majority of guys working real jobs love to eat wings and drink beer.
McDonalds 1/4 pounder with cheese is "health food" to them. lol

No...I think it's the price.

Why pay that much for crappy fast food when you can basically go to a half decent diner like Dennys or a local family owned restaurant and get much better quality food for the same price.

The key to cheap at McDonalds is stick to the $1 menu. You can get 3 McDoubles and have a bigger burger than their pricey burgers like the quarter pounder etc. $5 on the value menu and you are stuffed. But if you go for any of their combos, you are paying way more now.

I love A&W stands! How much does it cost where you are at? A few months ago our local one opened back up (it's closed during winter). There was 3 of us and it cost $31! 7 Spanish hot dogs and 2 orders of cheese fries. Needless to say I won't be going back. I'm not that broke that I can't afford it but those hot dogs are not worth that much :2 cents:

MCDs isn't going anywhere in our lifetime. Sure they might not be having record profits but that is why they make changes to try new ways to make money.

the mcdoubles aren't $1 anymore. They are like $1.50 but yup that's the best value. Once a week when I get groceries I'll stop off at mcds and either get 2 mcdoubles or 2 bacon mcdoubles and a small dr pepper (just enough to wash it down). Cost me $3.83 or $5.35

Jel 05-06-2015 04:32 PM

Big Mac, 2 double cheeseburgers and a large fries is my usual maccy d order (£7/$11), used to have that once a week (went through a phase of more than that but my asshole wasn't very grateful) then once a month, then every couple of months until last time I went it took 10 minutes for them to bring my order out while I sat there bored shitless in the car park, so I pulled links and blacklisted them. A maccy's once in a while ain'y gonna hurt anybody though :2 cents:

Most importantly, what used to be a treat is now something that for the most part, you'd be ridiculed for, had you admitted to eating there. It is has been a growing symbol of obesity and shame in America. Not the hamburger... but McDonalds itself. Thats nearly impossible to undo.

From a business standpoint, they have became increasingly unfocused over the years and continue to be even more unfocused going forward. They've pretty much destroyed their identity in the last 2 decades. Like any public company, the pressure of meeting stockholder expectations with short term fixes has not kept pace with a couple decades of a changing culture. I don't see them having much of a future and I am not surprised that each new quarter is showing more and more signs of struggling. Successful businesses do exactly what they've done. They remain fanatically focused, execute flawlessly over and over and over again.. then once they've reached a certain saturation point, growth slows and stagnates and then they start lurching around trying to leverage the "power of the brand" to try new things and this always comes at the direct cost of the thing that got them there. They remind me of dunkin donuts.... now with breakfast, lunch, sandwiches, coffee etc etc etc... and have left behind the very thing that got them where they are to begin with and total failure is imminent. In the business world, it tends to take time, but their impending failure, without refocusing on their core business, is certain.

Agreed but I think the problem is simply the whole stigma attached to the name "McDonalds". It's just for so long been synonymous with "cheap addicting fast food that is causing obesity". Should have done something about that a long time ago but probably too late. You never know though..

Also somewhat ironically I think the recession has hurt them in the sense that there seems to be many many more other options whether large operation or small at the same price point and better food and/or service.

McDonald's owned a majority stake in Chipotle when it had just 16 restaraunt. It helped build Chipotle up to 500 locations then completed divested from them in 2006 Their initial investment of $360,000,000 allowed them to take out $1.5billion when they divested :thumbsup

They also owned Boston Market and divested in them in 2006 as well so they could focus only on the McDonalds brand.

here a&w is a restaurant much like mcdonalds. its not a stand. anyways, for 2 teen burger combos its something like 16-18 bucks. not quite as cheap as mcdonalds but it tastes better. i don't know if they still do it but they used to serve your root beer in a frosted glass mug. the a&w root beer is the only time i'll drink pop.

Next to guns and religion McDonalds is the life blood of the south. All other fast food chains jerk off to them.

So cliche.

You do realize that McDonald's is worldwide.

And in that great "Southern" city of New York, it's so popular that they even deliver.

he probably means at a mall fast food court - that's the only A&W's I know of these days, haven't seen a free standing A&W in decades. I love the taste of A&W food.

And it sure is a whole lot more poisonous than anything you'll find in my fridge and probably more so than almost all the food you can buy in the local supermarket - unless you count in the finished dishes you can microwave... but who the fuck eats that crap?

So when I say it's poison, I don't mean arsenic-that-will-kill-you-instantly poisonous. I mean that it's not really food. It's closer to candy than food.

Posion: The ones that kill you the slowest and are undetectable are the bomb.

My rule of thumb is: the longer the shelf life...the shorter your life.

they have free standing ones all over the place in eastern ontario. maybe elsewhere too. i remember stopping at one in cambridge a few years back. they've only came back in the last 5 years or so i guess.

MrBottomTooth 05-07-2015 09:48 AM

Well they just came out with part of their turnaround plan here in canada. They're adding KALE to the menu. Who is running that place? The ceo of burger king or someone else that wants to see them fail?

MrBottomTooth 05-07-2015 09:51 AM

100 kale big macs.

i dont know why people think teens are health conscious. they are the fattest young people ever bred on earth. its so bad, the NFL drafted just 7 quarterbacks in the draft last week. thats the lowest QB draft in over 60 years! Todays teens play video games & smoke kind buds.

to the extent they choose chipotle over mcDs, its soley a fashion statement. McDonalds has been living on being trendy & in fashion & all that shit. their fucking ads, with the multiracial young thin people eating burgers, what horseshit. their pandering to cool is disgusting.

Well things that are trendy, go stale. Right now mcDonalds is stale like sears. they will rebound when they remember how they drew in customers in the first place.

I'm gonna guess that McDonald's is gonna take a big hit if idiots flipping burgers actually start getting $15 an hour in the U.S.
I know that a lot of bleeding hearts think it's only "fair".
But in my opinion LIFE is not "fair". If you are a dumb fuck with no marketable skills, and you find yourself in a unskilled labor job...you shouldn't be getting paid more than you are worth.

I think McDonalds and the rest of the fast food industry will soon respond to this through automation.
Then the people whining about making minimum wage doing a monkey job will have NO job.

I totally forgot about the min wage increases. Thats going to be a major factor in their future as well for sure.

Speaking of automation, i was on my way home about a year ago and stopped into a Jack in the Box to grab a sandwich and they referred me to the kiosk to order. It was a ridiculous mess. What you want, you can say in a sentence or two and it takes a matter of seconds to do that... but the kiosk forces you through a maze of endless questions and options and choices because you can't just say "I want a number 6, sandwich only and a medium drink".... and there is instant understanding. It was a mess. I went in there 6 months later to see if it was still there and it wasn't. Obviously it could likely be done much better but it really made me think hard about the difference between human interaction and trying to do it yourself. Think about the simple questions and steps you have to answer running a card at a supermarket checkout... there is maybe 4-6 steps. Ordering food with specific wants or selecting options turned it into something like a 30 step process.

Robbie 05-08-2015 04:41 PM

I've already seen the future for that.

Apps. Was at a fast food joint the other day and a big sign said to download their app and place your order when you first pull up. Then you just grab it and go.

So you would put in your order in the drive thru lane with your smart phone instead of talking to a speaker. Pretty slick.

TheSquealer 05-08-2015 04:47 PM

Yeah, I would hope they would really streamline everything to make that more easy. I was stunned at how clumsy Jack in the Box's effort was. I would imagine it would require a major menu change, a lot of menu simplification and streamlining to make it quick and easy

brassmonkey 05-08-2015 04:55 PM

yes! :2 cents: they are a family brand. they need low fat subs :2 cents: after the pink slime shit i refuse to eat there.
